On Every Street
Some are contemplative and others rock. A very good recording and some of Mark's better tunes. Love "Calling Elvis" and the titular track! Knopfler's voice is gravely, but well suited for this genre. Again, the recording itself is very clean and has some great guitar work and plenty of deep bass. . . even though I listen almost exclusively to Hi Rez music, this one sounds great in 16 bit stereo. Turn it up and he is right in the room with you! Recommended!.

My Favorite From The Great Knopfler & His Band
One reason is that it has, in my opinion, the best mixture of "fast" and "slow" songs, and all of them are quite different. Even though I enjoy all the Dire Straits CDs, this has always been my favorite. The lyrics are really diverse, from supernaturally "Calling Elvis," to the hilarious "My Parties" to the fun "My Bug" to the haunting "Planet Of New Orleans. " The latter is my favorite song here and, to me, shows Knopfler's talents like no other song. Actually, each song on this compilation is completely different from the others.

When you can start any piece of entertainment, CD, movie, book - whatever - off with a big bang, you've made an impressive start and that certainly is the case here with "Calling Elvis. " It's a great, great opening number and sets the tone for a very entertaining disc of music.

It ends that way, too, with the catchy country-sounding "How Long," making you smile and want to listen to the CD all over again. I've done that so many times I've lost count.

Spun Gold

Is it just me or is this one of most poignant lyrics ever written?

For me, On Every Street is a bonafide masterpiece, full of achingly beautiful, transcendent, evocative, lovingly created lyrics and music, all underscored by one of our most amazingly talented and tasteful guitarists. "It's your face I'm looking for, on every street". The greatness of a block of these tunes: Calling Elvis, On Every Street, When It Comes To You, Fade to Black, The Bug, You and Your Friend, Heavy Fuel, Iron Hand, Planet of New Orleans, is nonpareil.

Knopfler has never been better than this. These magnificent songs run the gamut of human emotions. An album for the ages, full of laughter, sadness, longing, irony, grace, and spontaneity.

The greatness of Mark Knopfler lies in the humility of his approach: he believes in the subtle power of the silence between the notes, the quiet thought, the murmur. He does not shout, doesn't demand to be heard, but speaks softly, with incredible clarity, skill and eloquence. Thus the impact of his work is magnified. We hear that voice, that guitar, those songs, and we think: this is someone to listen to. This is what has always set him apart: supernatural chops, but he's not about to show off to the point that the music, the song, the feeling, comes second.

a great introduction to a phenomenal songwriter
it's difficult to choose a favorite recording by DIRE STRAITS as there are so many . MARK KNOPFLER is one of those very rare folks who have the gift of both word and instrument at their disposal . as to this project , we all have our favorite compositions . i love the whole album though . to me , it's like a very satisfying collection of short fiction . if you're not familiar with the group or MARK , i'd advise you to start anywhere . if it leads you here , all the better . a remarkable project on every level . i can see why this was the bands' last recording . where do you go from here ? better folks arrive here late than never . they're minting fewer and fewer non derivative popular musicians with each new decade . .

This is a great Dire Straits album
Mark Knopfler, who is known to be highly influenced by J. I never get tires of listening to this album. J. Cale, demonstrates his love for Cale's music in the track "When it Comes to you". Knopfler's effortless style of guitar playing gives him the unique sound that is so unmistakable when heard. Also, the last track on the album "How Long" is a nice addition of slide guitar work that should not be missed. I highly recommended this album if you are undecided on a Dire Straits CD. .
