Tracks: 1: Telegraph Road 2: Private Investigations 3: Industrial Disease 4: Love Over Gold 5: It Never Rains

An epic tour de force
Says a lot for her attention span and ability to concentrate (not). I feel sorry for the reviewer who said she'd prefer it if the two long tracks were several four minute tracks. I could recommend a few bands for her, but I might get flamed by crowds of 13-year old females.

These tracks are absolutely fantastic. How could you get the amazing music development, slow sustained and incredibly controlled buildup and story theme into four minutes?

This is my favorite album of all times. It contains all of the best Dire Straits tracks with the exception of "Money for Nothing. "

Fantabulous.

excellent music....
a great early mix of dire straights. . typical great guitar riffs, smooth. . . . a nice addition to my collection. . . . mark is smooth.

Like it BUT...
I like Telegraph Road BUT. . it's too long. I'd rather have three good four minute songs than one good 14 minute song.
I like Private Investigations BUT. . . it's such an unusual and slow-paced song that I have to be in the right mood to listen to it.
I like Industrial Disease BUT. . . mainly for the lyrics; the melody is secondary.
I like Love Over Gold BUT. . . only consider it an average DS song; good, but don't see why it's so highly touted.
I like It Never Rains BUT. . . no buts here; this is solid Dire Straits.
I like the Love Over Gold album BUT. . . I like the other five DS albums more. Despite the qualifying remarks, it's a good album that I recommend to DS fans.

Arguably Dire Straits' finest hour as a band 25 plus years on

By the time Dire Straits recorded their fourth album, Dire Straits became a five piece spearheaded by lead singer/lead guitarist/songwriter Mark Knopfler plus bass player John Illsley, drummer Pick Withers (who would leave the band at the end of 1982), guitarist Hal Lindes and keyboard player Alan Clark (who would stay with the band until their unexpected 1995 retirement). Dire Straits' fourth album entitled Love Over Gold was released in September of 1982 on Vertigo/Phonogram in Europe and on Warner Bros here in the United States. Once again, Mark Knopfler produced the album with Bruce Springsteen engineer Neil Dorfsman engineering at The Power Station in New York City. I was in for a treat whenI first acquired the album in January of 1998 (although was familiar with "Industrial Disease" as US radio played that song a bit).
We begin the album with the fourteen and a half minute plus epic "Telegraph Road" which starts with synthesizers and National Steel acoustic and piano before the band comes in for an epic which is arguably one of the best songs ever made. Whoever said progressive rock was dead in 1982 must have forgotten to tell Mark Knopfler as this epic had musical changes which go from slow to mid-tempo back to slow to a fast shuffle at the end. The first side ended with the British single "Private Investigations" which starts with synthesizers and piano and featured some of Mark's best acoustic guitar work. There's few vocals on this track but the music is phenomenal, especially when Illsley's bass thumps signal the second half.
The album's second side started with the rocker and single here in the US "Industrial Disease" which is a great rocker and was a huge rock radio hit here in the US. The track would foreshadow the direction that its next album would take but a great rocker. Next is the album's title cut which is a nice ballad with a great piece of music, especially the ending with some great marimba work from Mike Manieri. We close the album with the near eight minute rocker "It Never Rains" which was the heaviest album closer the band ever did although the song starts quiet and ends with a bang.
Love Over Gold peaked at #18 on the Billboard chart and eventually went Gold here in the US although it tanked upon its initial release. Sales aside, Love Over Gold was Dire Straits' finest hour.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! .

Loving it again...
I came upon this recording many years ago and it passed from my listening stack. I've been a so-so casual Dire Straits fan for quite a while.

But it left an impression. At this point in my life I'm revisiting some recordings that left a mental mark, so I purchased it again this time on cd.

And I love it again. The ethereal feel and mood (and playful FUN of Industrial Disease), wonderful instrumentation and playing that builds compositions and not singles. . . it takes me on imaginary journeys. I love to just sit back, soak it in and let it take me way.

A standout performance in my collection.
