wierd scenes inside the gold mine anyway I first got this when I was in collage and probably played it almost every night-I didnt even know who dylan was although I heard some of his songs (who hasnt) but the sound of the cd kind of cooled me on it - I recently got the sacd hybrid- and it was worth every penny the sound is great and it brings back the images to the music and poetry- if you like this get that version you wont regret it. I love this cd its so freaking deep- I can just picture being carted up to an old midevil castle with roaring rain pouring down -old leaveless trees bending in the storming wind and the dirt road being surrounded by deep treachrous ditches but the black clad knights are surrounding me so theres no escape from what awaits in the castle on the hill at the end off the road, and thats just from the first song.
One of Dylan's best
If you are not familiar with this album and are in the process of filling in your Dylan collection and are wondering where to rank this in priority, I recommend you put this one VERY high on your list. . especially if you liked Desire and Time out of Mind. Lots of great songs. .
Apocalypto
Changing of the Guards; We Better Talk This Over; Baby, Stop Crying and Is Your Love in Vain? are heavy emotional rides over a rocky trail of love lost and the rotting away of a relationship. With personal drama beginning to sweep into his professional career, Bob Dylan took a huge artistic risk by revamping his sound with a large band and female vocalists for this album that delves directly to the heart and soul. Senor (Tales of Yankee Power) is a gem, while New Pony is one tough blues number.
The album reached #11 on the Billboard album chart and is showing the way to a special introspection that will be explored through a trio of gospel releases. Though very personal in nature, this album speaks to a listener who takes the time to carve a path on a trail of reflection.
don't walk down this street
Bob Dylan's first average album. I can't help but feel slightly let down with this album. It was bound to happen sooner or later. Street Legal is exactly that- every song sounds much poppier compared to previous efforts, not to mention somewhat fake-sounding as well, with the brass instruments. It's a MUCH different sound than what Desire was going for. It's much worse too.
Furthermore, most of these songs, while most of them are pretty melodic, it doesn't take long before I start getting tired of them. Something about the way the record was recorded bothers me as well- everything sounds annoyingly loud and obnoxious, and if anything, it shows exactly what was around the corner for Mr. Dylan- a slow decline into mediocrity (but to be fair, the same fate was in store for many musicians from the 60's and 70's- those darn big 80's production values raining down on our timeless party!).
I admit I like the opening song along with a couple other ones, but classic this is most certainly NOT.
Dylan as you've (probably) never heard.
Got in the car, talked my poor Dylan hating passenger into listening, and what do I hear but. I was leafing through Dylan albums and for a lark bought the only album they had that I hadn't heard a song off of. . . gasp, backup singers! I blushed, she looked at me and laughed. "I can't believe you listen to this". Well I couldn't either. Skip ahead to New Pony. Wow. To make a long story short, I came to love SL. And I am proud to say it is probably my favorite, only occasionally being outran by Blonde, JWH, or Desire, depending on my state of mind. Its got everything, rocking guitar riffs and allegorical western sagas. Detail your old ride, get off Highway 61, and get Street Legal!.
