MUCH Improved Sound....Beware, however......
. . . of cheap (in my case, Argentinian) South American imports being sold as the advertised Sony Legacy product. When I got mine, I noticed that the Sony logo looked weird and that the double jewel case seemed kind of cheap. Upon further inspection, I noticed that the product info was in Spanish and that the country of origin was Argentina. Although I doubt that the sound was negatively affected and the info in the booklet was in English, I noticed today at Barnes and Noble that the official domestic release is a digipac, which made me wonder if my copy was missing anything (like new photos, liner notes, etc. ) Some of you may not care, but all things considered, I'd rather have the domestic US release, especially since that's what I thought I was buying.

P. S. JUST TO CLARIFY: This only applies to Amazon marketplace items, not if you buy it from Amazon direct. You might want to buy from them in this case to make sure you get the legitimate release. I wish I had. . . . and I would be wary of buying all of the latest Dylan remastered releases from Marketplace vendors, especially if they are really cheap in price. Sometimes cheapest isn't always best. . . . .


As Warm as a Flannel Blanket
The songs are relaxed and low-key, with an unpretentious style that invites the listener into this timeless collection of real Americana tunes. The Basement Tapes makes me feel warm and comfortable, like putting on a warm flannel blanket on a chilly night. Many of the songs feel like they could have been written in the 1800's, they have such a timeless quality.

As far as the actual music, most of the songs are generally what you could call folk-rock, in that eclectic style The Band did so well. The singing is relaxed and pleasant, with none of the vicious snarl that Dylan had used when he moved from acoustic folk to electric. I think a lot of the charm of this album is because the musicians believed they were only recording rough demos that were never meant for public release. Hence, there was no pressure to be perfect. But what perfection they achieved in their relaxed, low-fi setting. If you like The Band, you will like this album. If you like Dylan, you will like this album. Even if you don't like The Band or Dylan, you may still like this album, which stands as a unique musical accomplishment. .


A Great Album
I really love both Bob Dylan and The Band and have to say that this is a wonderful album to own. . regardless if you are a fan. The music on this album is is great in that you won't hear a lot of repeats from other Bob or The Band albums. The songs are unique gems and the fact that there are two discs makes it twice as good. I strongly encourage anyone looking for a fantastic album to invest in this one.


Lo and behold, this is a classic!
That was wellover 30 years ago. I listened to the Basement Tapes when the bootleg first appeared. Many of the lyrics have run through my head like gospels ever since. Sometimes they just pop up, or a situation happens and a line from one of these songs describes it perfectly. These are songs to interpret our lives, by which I mean that much of it is often filled with nonsense! Glorious nonsense! Henry and Mrs. Henry, Bessie, Moss, Nick, Jim, Katie, and Tiny Montgomery will be friends of mine for life.

Great remastering
Highly recommended. This offhand masterpiece of downhome rock 'n' roll has greatly benefitted by the remastering which really brings out the Band's musical accompaniment.
