Enjoyable, but not the best He's best when he's political, he's best when he's pissed, he's best when he's thumbing his nose at the establishment. I've been listening to Earle's work since the beginning, and his voice and lyrics have always been very consistent. There is some of that in Washing Square Serenade. But not enough. This is more of an album of love songs to his new home -- and can we blame him? I always feel way after a move. Again, it's enjoyable, it's good, but, it's not his best. Country boy in the City makes Good Bringing old themes up to date and finding new ones on the streets of the Big Apple, Steve continues to please with heart-felt love songs, socially active lyrics and the sense of history that has marked his previous work. Steve Earle has taken his made-in-the-country sound to New York and found the heart of the city on his new release Washington Square Serenade.
