Townes Record I will definately recommend this seller. I received my order very very quickly and in perfect condition.
Steve Got This One Just About Right
I think that Townes would approve. Steve Earle's recent release of covers of some Townes Van Zandt's most popular songs is (IMHO)an excellent piece of work. Listening to any of that newer group of Texas outlaws e. g. Steve Earle, Guy Clark, etc. , doing any of Townes' "stuff" is almost like hearing a new gem from this dead too young Texas poet.
Most folks are familiar with PANCHO AND LEFTY, but much of Townes' music is less well known and those unfamiliar with said music are missing a gift. Van Zandt's work combines some well crafted poetry with heart touching melodies that are just right for listening to whilst sitting around the fire place with a cuppla' fingers of I. W. Harper and maybe your wife or a group of other good friends.
Steve Earle was a good choice of artist to lend his earthy baritone voice and guitar work to this CD. REAR VIEW MIRROR, my most played Van Zandt offering, is now joined by TOWNES and they shuffle along together rather nicely. Like my title says, Steve got this one just about right. I sent this copy to my son in New Jersey and he says that he enjoys it. This may suggest that Towne's music is accepted by a much wider audience/demographic than folks thought when Townes was still alive. I hope that makes Townes happy, wherever he is. The CD is making me happy up here in Northern California and with winter coming, I'm sure that I'll have many a pleasant evening, swapping stories with friends while TOWNES supplies the background music. I highly recommend this CD, TOWNES, without qualification.
Kind of a no-brainer
And they're Townes Van Zandt songs. I know reviews are meant to be "not too short and not too long", but really, what is there to say? It's Steve Earle. FOR A WHOLE ALBUM. I have to explain to you why this is awesome? You know it's awesome, because he starts out with "Pancho and Lefty", one of the awesomest songs ever. (Although I totally never got that Lefty had sold Pancho out. Oops!).
Steve Earle not magic, but pretty good
Steve Earle. . what can you say? My wife hates him and I love his "bluegrass level" stuff. To not exaggerate, Steve Earle has wide range of styles. Townes is a relatively simple CD; if you like Steve, you'll like this one. However, it has not percolated into my most frequently played stack.
I AM going to see him in Golden Gate Park at Hardly, Simply Bluegrass.

Solid covers by an artist earning his own name
Most artists have covered him. "Townes," musicians and fans utter the name with a level of reverence reserved for few. It's pretty audacious to do a whole CD of his songs. On the other hand, Steve Earle's earning his own street cred as a man to be covered.
"Townes" the CD is a 15-song collection of Townes Van Zandt's songs, most have been heavily covered by other artists from top names to the obscure. Some of the choices have me wondering, "Poncho and Lefty" and "White Freighliner Blues" have been done enough.
On the other hand, "Loretta" is made new in Earle's competent hands. And, Earle's dedication of "Brand New Companion" to his brand new squeeze, Allison Moorer, is pretty brilliant.
Of all the songs on the CD, "Colorado Girl" is probably my favorite. Good solid rendition and spare enough to bring the lyrics to the fore.
All in all, a good collection. If you are a strong Earle completist, you will probably want to pick this one up. It's almost an hour of good listening.
