Excellent debut!
The band broke with the wave of Brit-pop bands led by Oasis and Blur, but they quickly showed that they had a distinct set of talents and sounds, not least Sonyas vocals. This was the album that brought echobelly to largescale media attention in the UK with big singles such as "I can't imagine the world without me". The album is perhaps their most "pop" album, as it is more bubbly and vivacious than some of the more recent tracks. Yet there are still dark undertones as the themes of racism, and womens subjugation are prevalent in the lyrics. In all of the tracks the vocals soar, demonstrating Sonyas impressive range, and the powerful guitars provide a solid backdrop. The rythm section provide a more challenging and interesting backing than most other Britpop bands ever achieved, and this perhaps explains the continued interest in echobellys work, whilst other bands have faded away. Most importantly the songs are consistently good, with gliding melodies, and a well thought balance between tempo, rythm, and tone. Overall the sound is clean and fresh, definitely a pop album, but harder meanings lie beneath the surface, this is an excellent debut album from a band who continue to mature.
