A Breathtaking album!
The mix of Metal and Folk creates a perfect sound that is known only as ''Ensiferum''. This album is amazing, and one of my favorite cd's out of my collection. Jari Maenpaa is a songwriting genius and all of his work has impressed me greatly. This CD really got me into folk metal, and foreign metal in general.

The CD has multiple types of songs such as fast, energetic songs (hero in a dream, token of time, windrider) and ballad like songs (Eternal Wait, Abandoned,Old Man). This is One of the few cd's i own that i can put in, listen the every single song and fully enjoy it, also knowing most of the lyrics.

I highly recommend the CD to anyone that is looking into the folk-metal genre, or into ensiferum.

Favorite Ensiferum Album by far
If you need prove that it is the best, take a listen to Goblin's Dance, amazing. This is Ensiferum before they became popular, and before the original singer left the band. Hopefully this will cancel out the 2 star reviewee :).

Man, what a debut!!! Talk about epic Viking metal...
Anyway, this is the debut album by these incredible Finnish metal warriors. For those of you who aren't fluent in Latin, Ensiferum means 'sword bearer', and for those of you who aren't already aware, I am a complete and utter toolbar (who doesn't know Latin).

The thing that impressed me most about this album is just how well all the songs are put together. We have a fine collection of highly energetic melodic death metal songs with great guitar work and keys. There are also some subtle touches that set these guys aside from the rest of the pack, like some of the acoustic guitar parts (check out the intro to Token of Time). I also really dig the chant/clean vocal sections, and folksy instrumental parts.

Overall, this album is incredible and there is a clear reason why so many people love it. If you are a fan of viking, folk, melodic death, or power metal, I think you'll probably dig this. Definitely one of my favorites (which is kind of a stupid thing to say, because what does that mean to you, the discerning listener, who isn't familiar with my crappy tastes? Not a whole heck of a lot. ).

We are not impressed
What the heck is that? Well it's pretty much that. This album came very recommended by a number of site as an incredible "Viking" metal album. . . sounds like some Vikings survived and have been playing as part of a metal band called Ensiferum. However the album is not as grand as you'd expect I expected it to be. I am surprised how technically dated the sound seemed. Yeah this came out in 2001 but there have been other masterpieces that sound more folicish. . . more epic. All the songs are pretty straight forward. Solid riffs, thumping drums and death voice that sounds abit to weak or high for a "Viking" metal album. Reminded me alot at times of Anders Fridén from In Flames. Then the clean and chorus vocals were a chuckle really. It was kinda fun to listen to. At times it does have that folk sound to their tracks that are abit cut and paste. The album is just not that great but perhaps some of Ensiferum's newer efforts have perfected thier style of metal. As far as this freshman attempt well that is exactly what Ensiferum sounded like to me.
