An album that changed pop music They played on the CH 12 stage at Summerfest, in Milwaukee, near the main gate. In 1998, I bought this CD, directly from the band. I was impressed not only by their music, but by the fact that their live speaker mix was in stereo, something that I rarely hear! I remember saying to them something like "Maybe we'll hear you on the radio soon, you guys are gonna make it. " There was something different about this band. Their music was part folk, but part pop. I also have their album "Not From Concentrate" which is probably one of their first and probably their best, and has the earlier recordings of some of the songs from this album. The sound on that disc is a little better, too. At first listen, I sorta went. . . ohh kay. The mix on the whole album "We've Never Heard Of You Either" was a little dry - there was something not right about the mix on the vocals. However, after playing the CD two or three times over, I began to like it. I predicted that the song "And Then She Says" could be a hit, except that the intro was a little too long and musically needed a fix. I copied the song into an audio editor, and simply cut out the first "here come's your goodbye". The intro dragged out a little bit, and I thought that this edit was a little more radio friendly. Anyway, this edited copy got sent to a local "micropower" radio station run by one of my friends, on the south side of Milwaukee, where it got lots of airplay between 1998 and 1999. In fact, at one point, the whole album was in the random nightime playlist. It was probably the most airplay the band had gotten anywhere in the country at that time. It was most likely that this album is what got the band discovered by Columbia in 1999 or 2000. The mix on the acoustic version of "crazy for this girl" on the 2000 album is very similar to the mix I heard on stage at Summerfest in 1998. Anyway, if anyone from the band is reading this, I'm glad to hear you made it to the top of the charts, like I said, you guys are gonna make it. . . and you did! One CD can make a difference! Neil Schubert.
