"Hooch" is just the beginning of a great CD I was very pleasantly surprised. This is one of those CDs that I bought based on only one song that I heard (Hooch) and figuring that I probably wouldn't like the rest of the CD. It took a couple of listens, but the rest of the CD has really grown on me. "Hooch" is definitely the big catchy "hit" song, the rest of the songs are slightly different than "Hooch", but they are mostly very catchy and very well made. One song, "Great Thing (St Luicia)", is definitely my favorite song on the CD - in fact I think it is *way* better than "Hooch. " Happy listening.
Fast forward until last year, when I stumble across this album in the bins of Tower Records in New York City. I put it in my CD player, and I realize again what a talented bunch of guys they are. Catchy tunes and skilled musicianship combine in original ways, creating fun and danceable songs. Highlights include "Be Gone," "Super Natural" and "Hooch. " I like they way they draw in diverse musical styles, including jazz, funk, calypso and even zydeco, without turning the album into the unfocused mess it could have been. This CD isn't perfect. Some of the lyrics are simplistic and forced (e. g. , "Good Thing"), and some of the songs are just lightweight filler. But overall, it's a very stong showing and a worthy addition to any music collection.
