Saudades de Rock
. This is the best Extreme album, maybe the best rock album ever . . and I bought Pornograffiti back in the day. .

Hits and Misses
For all of Extreme's career, nothing has had to grow on me. I've waited a long time to review Saudades de Rock because I wanted to, and heard that it may need to grow on listeners. It's always been love at first sight. Not so much this time. At first I was just too excited and pumped that my favorite band of all time was releaing a new album to care what was on it. The band put 'Star' on their Myspace page for a while as a teaser and it was great to hear the band back doing what we loved them for in the 1st place. Cool riffs and harmonies. I would not however have chosen this as the "lead track" from the album. The chorus takes some time to get used to. If you're a 1st time listener that doesn't know what Extreme is about, 'Star' could be enough to turn you off right away.

I'm not going to go track for track here. . . there are some great songs on the album and some that I certainly could have done without. It's a little all over the place, which what Extreme album isn't? Gary pushes to far and hard on some vocals that for one he won't be able to pull off live and two, some of it is just downright hard to swallow. This is most apparent on 'Last Hour'. . . that song will never grow on me. Great lyrics though.

Flower Man? WTF? Very reminiscant (sp?) to Nuno's Schizophonic album. (Check out 2 Weeks In Dizneyland) This song does nothing for me.

(Did I say I wasn't going track for track? Oops)

Take Us Alive is awesome. . . my wife said "You would never like this song if it wasn't Extreme doing it" I can't answer, I don't know. It moves, great riff, and it's fun. Love the lyrical content here as well. Very "Tragic Comic" like.

'Run' I love this song also. Most "Extreme" on the disc. 'Learn to Love' I could take or leave. It's OK.

'King of the Ladies' is a great song. Very nostalgic. Cool to have Nuno on vocals. Really dig this song a lot.

'Ghost' is a very moving song. Anyone that has lost someone close to them will relate to this song. Very cool.

'Slide' again, could take or leave it. Not a bad song, but also doesn't want to make me listen to it again.

'Interface' Okay, I was SO against Extreme covering the Dramagods version of this song, HOWEVER, this is the best song on the record. It's powerful, moving, Gary's vocals are great, the lyrical content is so clever and hearing it produced on a BIG record just made it all that much better. GREAT song.

'Sunrise' Blech! 'Nuff said

'Peace' Might have to give this more time. I skip it everytime. Hasn't grabbed me at all. To be fair, I haven't given it a chance.

In comparison to the preceding Extreme albums, this one does not stack up in my opinion. I felt the same way about 'Punchline' also, but that grew on me after a while, so who knows. . . 3 stars from me, mediocre. Worth the buy though.

As good as Pornograffiti !!!
Just another awesome album !!!! Nuno's still the best guitarist in the world, Gary's voice sounds great and the whole band still rock :)Lyrics, medolies, everything is perfect .

extreme makes 2008 disc of the year
Nuno puts on a guitar clinic through out this recording. To make things short and simple this is a must buy if you are a fan of this band or a fan of hard rock. Gary is singing at his raspy best and sometimes sounds like Sammy Hagar. New drummer Kevin Figueiredo sounds great and has hints of Bonzo when he plays. Pat Badger plays a tight solid bass and even gets a little flashy when the song permits. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST MUSIC RELEASES IN 2008. This disc needs a few listens to fully enjoy. .

A+ Band, A+ Cover Art, B for the Music
But of course compared to buying a CD for one song I heard on the radio (Lips of an Angel) and then not liking ANY of the other Hinder songs I guess that's not bad right?

Gary's vocals were great (especially on Interface), Nuno's guitar work was great but my favorite two are the slowest songs on the album, Interface and Ghost and I was hoping for the opposite. It's above average due to the talent involved alone but I really only enjoy 4-5 songs on a regular basis. It is a CD I will play every now and then but it's not one of those "gotta have it in the car at all time" CDs like I was hoping for. Who knows? Maybe it will grow on me even more as time goes on. At first listen to the song "Star" I loved the beginning but the chorus annoyed me with the word Star being repeated so much. . . . but now it's grown on me more.

Regardless, I'm VERY happy they re-united to create the new project even for the new version of Interface alone! When their next CD comes out I won't hesitate to buy it and I'll hope this is just a warm up for better things to come.

Noah.
