Another Caper at Cropredy The band and their special guests are the stars of Britian's largest festival of folk & rock. Every August, on the second weekend of that month, in a field in Oxfordshire, Fairport Convention's Cropredy Fesival is held.
This 79 minute CD is wee part of Fairport's set of day three of the village fete. To close the festival Fairport Convention, plays a mammoth three hour set that features the core band of today, members of previous FC line-ups are always on hand, as are guests from just about every other rock & folk bands of this planet.
Fairport Convention has: Simon Nicol on guitars & vocals, Dave Pegg on bass guitar & vocals, Ric Sanders on violin, Chris Leslie on mandolin, bouzouki, violin, tambourine & vocals & Gerry Conway on drums and percussion devices. Guests on this CD include: Robert Plant, Vicki Clayton, Chris & Kellie While, Kristina Donahue and former Fairporters: Maartin Allcock & Jerry Donahue.
The Fairport album: "Babbacombe Lee" was performed at the 2008 festival in it's full form. "Hanging Song" & "Cell Song" are featured from the 1971 recording. A segment of Sandy Denny's tunes, was featured mid-set that included Vicki Clayton singing "Fotheringay", Chris While performing: "It'll Take A Long Time" & "Who Knows Where The Time Goes?" and Kellie While singing: "John The Gun". Robert Plant & Kristina Donahue sang the Led Zeppelin classic: "Battle Of Evermore" that featured Sandy Denny, on the original recording, that for many was the highlight of the evening.
With Simon & Chris sharing the lead vocals, Fairport favorites: "Breakfast in Mayfair", "Reynard The Fox", "Reynardine" and "John Gaudie" are performed perfectly. With the incredible fiddle of Ric Sanders, soaring over everything and the string wizard Chris Leslie, this is a band that knows of the wood and the wires, like no other.
This CD features songs that Fairport has not played in decades, you must look elsewhere for: "Matty Groves" & "Meet on the Ledge". As only a few dozen other live Fairport Convention CD's exist from past festivals, this is not a difficult task to find them.
Fairport Convention, is a working band that tours the world and still makes new and wonderful folk/rock records. Thousands of groups around the world have followed what they started over four decades back. This is a excellent sound document of the Kings of British Folk Rock, live on stage in a field infront of their fans. I give this CD four & 1/2 stars, and I would give it five stars if I could hear the other two hours of the set.
Maybe, a deluxe three CD version could be brought forth! How about it, Simon & Peggy?
This is one of the greatest bands that we have. . . . . Fairport Convention.
4. 5 Stars.
