Best Fates Warning Album IMO I simply LOVE this album, every song is great with epitaph being the best. Most view Awaken Guardian as FW's best album of the Arch era, but I disagree (although its close). Love the old school feel and simple yet effective riffs. A real classic, one of my favorite Metal albums of all time.
pirates of anti schematics i really enjoy the imagination of the group, and the odd time signatures, and themes,in the songs. prog rock heaven,as far as this music goes, this band can belt it out with the best of them. my favorite tracks, are, pirates of the underground, and orphan gypsy. it's a shame that this band, never got the attention,or notoriety, that they desirve, because this is a very talented group, with a tremendous upside. great cd. .
The zenith of progmetal Anyone who doesn't like it doesn't know what music is. In my opinion, this is one of the very best metal[or any genre] albums of all time. Everything is top notch & i hope i live to be 1000 only so i can listen to it that long!!! Also, my girlfriend has this pitbull/shepard who has a habbit of scratching herself with her hindleg & with the other hindleg she hops up & down to keep her balance i guess. I call this dance the ''Duley's Finks dance'' & for some reason, the first half of the guitar solo on ''Pirates Of The Underground'' totaly brings that to mind & visa versa since i witnessed that ''Duley's finks dance''back in november. I'm not kidding!I wish i could play that solo though-dangerous pyrotechnics. Either you're hysterical now, or you'll send the men in white coats after me but hey-i sympathise with people who fall asleep reading someone's pompas tediously long self-absorbed review on something-talk about a waste of time! Anyway-I frikin worship this album & will for the rest of my life. The cover's about as good to! GET IT! .
Underrated Masterpiece When I first listened to The Spectre Within, I didn't know what to think because I had never heard anything like it. If there was ever a band that didn't get anywhere near the amount of credit they deserved, it was Fates Warning, and this album is my favorite from them. The album has amazing melodies that recall bands like Iron Maiden and Mercyful Fate, but there is also a uniqueness which I believe stems from the two driving forces: Vocalist John Arch and guitarist Jim Matheos. These two fantastic musicians work together to not only create beautiful, thrashing metal, but they also create a dark atmosphere that is hard to describe. An almost mystical feel surrounds and engulfs the listener.
I think the reason the album holds up so well is due to the progressive nature of the songs. They are often complex, and the song-writing is so interesting that the listener never gets bored. The first song, "Traveler in Time", is a perfect example. At first it may sound odd and disjointed. But after a couple of listens you start to discover the unique brilliance and strong sense of melody that characterizes all of Fates Warning's early music. Every track is amazing with my favorites being "Without a Trace" and "The Apparition". This album is a true gem that, along with their follow up, Awaken the Guardian, unfortunately got lost in time. It may not be for everyone, especially given the complex songwriting and strange vocals of John Arch, but if you enjoy melodic bands like Mercyful Fate, this one should be a real treat.
A piece of metal history Some of the people reviewing this album negatively were probably not even born when this album came out. This is a good album and in my opinion an album that was ahead of it's time. It is unfair to compare Korn with Fates Warning- there is decade of differance between the two. Fates were pioneers of metal (like tons of the 80s'bands that get zero credit). Metal was a new world in the 80s'- bands like Fates Warning laid the groundwork for bands like Korn etc. Have a little respect for your elders and listen to this stuff with a sense of perspective. Compare Spectre Within to other titles that were around at the time (1985) and I believe you will see that Fates Warning were breaking new ground.
