A great metal album, even when you have John Arch in it
I know a lot of people prefers the heavy early Fates Warning while I like more the more progressive band of after Perfect Simmetry, but is a matter of taste. This was Fates second album, very similar to Night on Brocken but better. This album shows without doubt that this guys had a lot of talent, even when they were trying to find their own musical identity. Some people calls it progresive, I don't know about that, sounds quite heavy and straight to me. Reminded me a little about an early Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Chastain.

The only bad thing about this album is the vocalist, John Arch. i really do not like this guy, never had. Half of the time he is just taking the other half screaming, and he is not a good screamer. I cannot understand the fact that he has so many fans, even today. I was so happy when Fates got Ray Alder, a real singer who kicks Arch's a** every day in every song. But again is a matter of taste. My absolute dream would be for Fates to re record this album as an instrumental one or even better, with Ray Alder doing all the lirics. But that's just a dream.

Best Fates Warning Album IMO
I simply LOVE this album, every song is great with epitaph being the best. Most view Awaken Guardian as FW's best album of the Arch era, but I disagree (although its close). Love the old school feel and simple yet effective riffs. A real classic, one of my favorite Metal albums of all time.

The zenith of progmetal
Anyone who doesn't like it doesn't know what music is. In my opinion, this is one of the very best metal[or any genre] albums of all time. Everything is top notch & i hope i live to be 1000 only so i can listen to it that long!!! Also, my girlfriend has this pitbull/shepard who has a habbit of scratching herself with her hindleg & with the other hindleg she hops up & down to keep her balance i guess. I call this dance the ''Duley's Finks dance'' & for some reason, the first half of the guitar solo on ''Pirates Of The Underground'' totaly brings that to mind & visa versa since i witnessed that ''Duley's finks dance''back in november. I'm not kidding!I wish i could play that solo though-dangerous pyrotechnics. Either you're hysterical now, or you'll send the men in white coats after me but hey-i sympathise with people who fall asleep reading someone's pompas tediously long self-absorbed review on something-talk about a waste of time! Anyway-I frikin worship this album & will for the rest of my life. The cover's about as good to! GET IT! .

A piece of metal history
Some of the people reviewing this album negatively were probably not even born when this album came out. This is a good album and in my opinion an album that was ahead of it's time. It is unfair to compare Korn with Fates Warning- there is decade of differance between the two. Fates were pioneers of metal (like tons of the 80s'bands that get zero credit). Metal was a new world in the 80s'- bands like Fates Warning laid the groundwork for bands like Korn etc. Have a little respect for your elders and listen to this stuff with a sense of perspective. Compare Spectre Within to other titles that were around at the time (1985) and I believe you will see that Fates Warning were breaking new ground.

RESPONSE TO GERGELLOR BELOW
So before you read this, find "Gergellor's" review of "Spectre Within" and then come back and read this rebuttal. (NOTE: Rarely does a review make me so sick that I feel a counter-attack is needed. . . Thanks alot!) Your (Gergellor) review might be the single most lame-brained pathetic excuse for a review I have ever read. My grandma is more metal than you because even she knows that "The Spectre Within" wasn't even remotely cliche for 1985. And for you to make the absurd comment that "Awaken the Guardian" is much more progressive than "Spectre. . . " just proves that you've never heard either album, as FATES WARNING didn't become TRULY "progressive" until the dawn of the 90's. "The Spectre Within" is UNDENIABLY one of the GREATEST metal LP's of the 80's and the BEST AMERICAN METAL LP of 1985. It IS a product of its time(the mid-80's) but illustrates an up and coming band with amazing potential. John Arch's vocals are amongst the best metal vocals of all-time and the guitar work on "Spectre Within" is legendary(check out track 3 "Without A Trace"!!!!). So basically I think YOU Mr. Gergellor are a PATHETIC EXCUSE FOR A METALHEAD. You probably listen only to lame crap like Limp Bizkit, etc. In some ways I'm GLAD you HATE "The Spectre Within" so much because I WOULDN'T WANT TO LIKE THE SAME ALBUM AS YOU. YOU DON"T DESERVE TO LISTEN TO CLASSIC ALBUMS LIKE "THE SPECTRE WITHIN"!!!.
