Customer Reviews A great live album! It's unique, unbridled, and full of raraties which are treats for the anyone such as Let Me Go, Frog named Freddy, Alone, My favorite Person in the world, and Somebody Help Me. Melissa is amazing, and this CD is really a winner. The extended improv ending on Blue Sky Night really blows me away. Very intense. Melissa's intensity and passion really show through on her live work where she really lets go. Although one could compare her to artists such as Ani Difranco or Patty Larkin, Melissa is a true original with a stunningly versatile and honest voice as well as a fiery approach to expressing herself through a guitar. She does slow and fast songs each in their own way very very well. She takes chances. She's constantly evolving as an artist. She hits the hammer on the head 90% of the time. She's not afraid to be real. To be herself. Although this album may seem dated, with her newer two disc live album out. If you are wondering if this one will deliver? I can definitly say it really does! But then again, Melissa Ferrick is a real pro. She is very good at what she does.
The Best of Early Ferrick Live Her live sound is very different from her studio sound, as she appears solo, with nothing but her guitar, voice, and endless charm. The only thing better than A Melissa Ferrick album is hearing her live. Don't let the stripped down sound fool you, however, as Melissa can still entertain with the best of them. Missing from this album is much of the crowd interaction she gets between her songs, but you can't be expected to get the full live experience just from listening to a record. What you can expect is a range of songs drawn from her Atlantic records and "Made of Honor," an EP/album available only at shows (At the time, anyways). Also featured on this album is a single studio track not available elsewhere (Hence the +1), "Favorite Person in the World. " This track is good, but the real meat is the live tracks. Several of these songs are the best versions available. Such songs include "Asking for Love," "Blue Sky Night," and an incredibly high energy "'Til You're Dead," My favorite Ferrick song period. The greatness of this album are not limited to a few tracks, though. "Willing To Wait," "Somebody Help Me," and "Massive Blur" make up a set of dark and powerful songs. "Let Me Go," "To Let You See Me," "Heredity," and "Frog Named Freddy" are softer, more soulful songs. And for high energy, there is "Asking for Love," "You Have Known It All Along (Not as high energy, but clearly upbeat)," "Alone," "Blue Sky Night," and "'Til You're Dead. " All of these songs reflect upon her prowess as a live entertainer, and are quality songs in and of themselves. I highly recommend you pick up +1 (And Skinnier and Faster), and find the closest appearance Melissa Ferrick has to your location, and get yourself some tickets to it.
