another great cd
if you love her cds, then you will REALLY love her live performances. i've been a big fan of melissa since the mid 90s. she is still my all-time favorite person to see live.

Intense

I bought the cd for one song - Drive. On this record, Melissa Ferrick has the intensity of Alanis Morissette on her breakout hit You Oughta Know, or of Ani DiFranco on pretty much everything she does. It is an amazing song. It is very sexual. Melissa is a dominant lover, driving her partner to ecstasy. The music accompanies the lyrics perfectly.

All of the other songs on the record have a lot of angst in them. Some of them are as angry as You Oughta Know.

For example, Some Kinda Nerve. Like what am I supposed to do now, just forgive you? So if you think you made a mistake by leaving me, you're too late.

Another song, Hold On, is about the immediacy and transience of passion. I don't know how long this is gonna last. Let me be your drug tonight. Don't ruin this rush for me.

Blind Side has an interesting truth in it. I love everything about you and I don't even know you, so I hope everything I made up about you is true. I really like that line.

The title song is Melissa telling someone that she's just not in love, and she claims her freedom. It's a pretty blunt NO to a marriage proposal, apparently.

Melissa is interesting. I like her guitar and her mind. But she's pretty intense to be around, in most of the songs here.

Very good, but not quite Ani Difranco
Quite frankly though, I had some trouble getting right into it because it doesn't seem much like she's quite into it. Melissa Ferrick has a good album here and I will probably buy another one after this experience. The personality and heart comes through a little bit undynamic.

If you want the power, poetry and musicianship kicked up a notch though, click on over to Ani Difranco.
