Back in the (taxi)driver's Seat! How can Bryan Ferry produce an album of cover songs and make it feel like an album of original compositions? Especially after an album of all originals ("Bete Noir") that sounded more like Ferry doing parody covers of Ferry songs?!? Maybe a 6-year solo hiatus had something to do with it. A return to form, and a return to covers, for the great master. Maybe the change of decades? I dunno. All I know is, this one does the job, and does it right!.
Rich opulent sound - unique vocals
I know other people who don't like his style. I like Bryan Ferry's unique vocal style - It's a little weird. The production values are fantastic - very rich complex textured sounds in all tracks. The negative to me is that I'm not crazy about most of the songs although many are classics. "I Put A Spell On You" is probably my top favorite - starts with a spacey almost Jimi Hendrix like guitar feedback sequence and then fades into a compelling dancey beat. I prefer his stuff with Roxy Music. "Is Your Love Strong Enough", "More than This", "Take a Chance with Me" are probably my top favorites. . . This is different material. Classics done with his different voice and rich production values.
SADLY OVERLOOKED
Dreamy reworkings of 50's standards produced by Robin Trower. Buy this used for less than dollar - how can you lose??
Burn your own copy minus Amazing Grace and sit back and enjoy. I had this CD for over a year before I "got" it. When I listened to it the 5th time it's brillance hit me. Now it is always in the changer in my bedroom. .
might be my fave BF
So smooth and cool. Great album. Rescue me and Answer Me are freakin' awesome. And I never liked Amazing Grace in the least until I heard it on this album. Just enough quirkiness in every song to make each one interesting, too.
Always tasteful, occasionally inventive
The most romantic record around? I'm not sure about that, but, hey, whatever floats your boat. With ex-Procol Harum guitarist and Hendrix acolyte Robin Trower on board as the main supplier of instrumental atmospherics, Ferry manages to completely denature R&B classics such as "Rescue Me" and "I Put a Spell On You," an intriguing, if possibly dubious, accomplishment.
