A Rose is a Rose is a Rose K. O. JUST TO GET A COUPLE OF THINGS STRAIGHT. FIRST, WHILE THE TITLE OF THIS IS NOT "WORD SALAD" IT HAS ALL THE SONGS IN THE SAME ORDER OF F. Z. 'S FIRST LP RELEASED IN THE U. S. I KNOW THERE WERE A COUPLE OF EP'S AND SINGLES RELEASED PRIOR TO W. S. , BUT A CHECK OF THE FISHER Z DISCOGRAPHY SITE INDICATES THAT W. S. WAS INDEED THEIR FIRST L. P. SECOND,THEIR FIRST THREE ALBUMS ARE QUITE GOOD BUT SOMEWHAT DATED. THIS IS A DIFFICULT BAND TO CATEGORIZE, BUT IF YOU CAN TOLERATE STING AND THE POLICE, YOU WILL ALSO LIKE FISCHER Z. LISTEN TO PORTIONS OF THE SONGS AVAILABLE ON AMAZON TO GET A FEELING FOR THEIR SOUND. I DON'T THINK THESE FIRST THREE ALBUMS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON CD MUCH LONGER - SO GET YOUR COPIES NOW.
beautiful memories I heard So Long in 1982 and had it in my head ever since [really]then in 2005 I decided to get a record at Amazon, and I've been loving and listening ever since. Fischer-Z has made me very happy.
The Workers a great effort from a great band.
Under-Rated Mostly because of the lead singers voice, but also with lyrics like the one that comes from a stalker, their hit "So Long", without a trace of irony. This is a strange group. I found them to be iconoclastic and their songs stuck in my head and were more fun to listen to with each play. It was easy to see how they never got popular though. Intelligent, interesting lyrics or pompous, pretentious ones delivered with a nails on chalk board falsetto vocal is not the recipe for \commercial success. Not only this, but from reading these reviews it seems like even some fans don't have a clue about their catalog. This release contains all of Word Salad, one song from Going Deaf For A Living, why "Limbo" I have no idea, and one song from Red Skies Over Paradise. I think calling it Word Salad is the best description possible. I also think this is their best work, whether you do or not is a matter of taste, but mentioning it being a debut as a drawback is pretty funny. I think debut's create the most classic albums out of any stage of release. This is no exception. There is not a dud on the CD and the only songs I don't asbsolutely love are the hits, "Remember Russia", "The Worker", and "Acrobat". The rest of the CD is incredible. Every song is a favorite. Going Deaf For A Living is pretty good, but doesn't measure up to this one and Red Skies Over Paradise isn't even close. If your lookimg for something different I would highly recommend this compilation containing all of Word Salad and two extra songs.
WORD SALAD by any other name... A strange mix but a welcome one for long time fans [like me] who never got Word Salad on CD when it was available. Fischer Z's first album with two bonus track from later LP's. This is very typical of the early Fischer Z sound as found on their first 3 albums. For me it is better than the follow-up, Going Deaf For A Living, but not quite as good as Red Skies Over Paradise, my favourite Fischer Z offering. If you loved Marleise or So Long you'll find plenty to enjoy on this disc.
Previous reviewers got it WRONG The Worker is a COMPILATION cd - it is NOT Fischer Z's first album and it was NOT originally called Word Salad (tho' Word Salad was the title of Fischer Z's first album). I'm sorry but the previous 2 reviewers have got some of their facts wrong. As far as I know it has not been released on vinyl (though, if it has, someone will mention it here). Now that I've got that out of the way here's the review! An ok compilation that includes some, but not all, of FZ's best stuff. Having previously owned (on vinyl) their first 3 albums -Word Salad, Going Deaf for a Living and Red Skies Over Paradise - I feel suitably qualified to know. I bought this cd in a real shop in the UK because it was there, and tho' I do play it fairly often it does not COMPLTELY evoke FZ's best moments.
