A Small But Important Point.

I used to be less than keen on this album because, I feel, it suffers when compared to "Rumours", for a lack of the former's consistency. This 'version' of the album is sold as a 'budget edition' and you will certainly be able to get it pretty cheaply(it should be cheap as it is not the original album). Actually I have been playing it again recently and find it is growing on me. One thing it has always had going for it though, was the presence of 'Sara', a song that is not just one of the best Fleetwood Mac songs, but one of my all-time favourite songs.

This 'version' of the album, however, features the shorter 'single edit' of 'Sara' for no fathomable reason. . . Oh hang on a minute, could it be that the 'suits' at the record company saw a way of persuading even casual fans of the band to buy the 'Deluxe 2 disc edition' of the album for more money, when a straight forward remastering of the album on a single disc would be enough for all but a few die-hards.

It has been suggested that CD sales are falling. With this sort of cynical manipulation/stupidity(they chopped up the highlight of the album!)the record companies are 'sewing the seeds' themselves.

I have seen it suggested that the reason that an 'edited down' version was offered was because of 'technical constraints of CDs at the time of its release' well the full album the 2 disc reissue(Tusk)is 74mins 20 secs long and fits neatly onto 1 disc, so I don't see how that argument can be used, even if that was the case, there was a simple solution, they could have released the album on 2 discs at the time(it's not that difficult is it?).

4 and a bit stars for the Proper album, 3 for this.

Would Have Been A Better Single Album
Their previous album, "Rumours", was one of the biggest albums in rock history, and the album before it, "Fleetwood Mac", had aged well in the hearts of a suddenly huge legion of fans. There was an inordinate amount of pressure on Fleetwood Mac in the late 1970's. Facing huge touring demands and the pressure to deliver another timeless album, the band elected to produce a double album, with the hope of creating another commercial juggernaut. It didn't work out that way; but it wasn't for a lack of effort at all. There were at least 8 really good songs on this album, but the rest - particularly on the second disk - didn't leave any lasting impression. And the marketing ideas weren't real good either - the choice of "Tusk" as the first single was questionable, although it's not a bad song; but the second single, Stevie Nicks' wonderful "Sara", would have been a much better choice. And how Lindsay Buckingham's terrific "What Makes You Think You're The One" was not a single is beyond me. All of the three top 10 singles are worth the price of admission (The third single was Christine McVie's "Think About Me"); the fourth single, which didn't fare very well, was Stevie's "Sisters Of The Moon", a moody, dark song in the vein of "Gold Dust Woman". Buckingham's energetic "The Ledge" and rollicking "Not That Funny" are also worth a listen, as is McVie's "Over And Over". If the Mac had stopped recording after the first disk, they probably would have sold more copies of "Tusk" - because essentially everything memorable about this set is on that disk. .

Love Fleetwood Mac
It is; however; not the best from Fleetwood Mac. A good album, and well worth the money.

Tusk (1979) 5 STARS
Its not that experimental actually. This album is absolutely brilliant. This is real music. The members of Fleetwood Mac, mainly Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, have an immense amount of unfathomable musicianship. The song "Beautiful Child" is absolutely beautiful. Lindey always plays such a good guitar on the Fleetwood Mac albums. Nothing really compares to his guitar solo on "Go Your Own Way". Tusk is amazing just like all their albums. .
