FUTURE GAMES (REPRISE RECORDS/1971)
Original guitarist Jeremy Spencer had dropped out of sight two weeks into their American tour only to be discovered a few days later in a Children Of God commune. REVIEW: With "FUTURE GAMES" Fleetwood Mac made a clean break from its bluesy past. Thus devoid of one less member: the group called upon ex-band leader Peter Green to help finish out the tour, and then promptly auditioned for a new guitarist. Californian Robert Welch got the job: and his r&b/jazz flavored playing (and refreshingly moody rock sensibilities) contrasted superbly with lead guitarist Danny Kirwan's introspective composing style and Christine McVie's bright-eyed pop (incidently: this was Mrs. McVie's first "official" Mac release even though she played keyboards, sang, and designed the cover for the group's last album "KILN HOUSE"). With such a strong lineup it is no wonder that "FUTURE GAMES" has been critically acclaimed as one of Fleetwood Mac's finest achievements. Welch clocks in with two gloriously diverse musical concoctions (the hard-core blues of "Lay It All Down" and the epic title track), while the three Danny Kirwan tunes ("Sands Of Time", "Woman Of 1,000 Years", and "Sometimes") shows his far-reaching musical talents at an absolute peak, and the newly christened McVie pens two of the best numbers on the record (the rollicking "Morning Rain" and the lilting "Show Me A Smile"). The beauty, melodicism, and originality of "FUTURE GAMES" cannot be overstated. It is simply one of the greatest LP's in the group's canon, one of the greatest LP's released in 1971, and (quite possibly) one of the greatest LP's released EVER. I envy the neophyte listener who gets to hear this record for the first time: as it is certain to earn a special place in your music collection. HARSH LANGUAGE: none. VIOLENCE: none. SEXUAL REFERENCES: none.

NOTES FROM A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE: This is a stunning piece of work that cannot be praised enough! For certain they just don't make albums like this anymore. Even if you don't like Fleetwood Mac: you should at least take a listen to this record as it is truly one of the best and most original of their releases. As far as the content goes: it is completely free of harsh language, violence, and sex. The only possible offense it might give Christian believers is the astrological leanings of the title track, and the poetic personifications of nature and the sun as a "woman" (and vice-versa) on the luxurious "Woman Of 1,000 Years". Even Welch's "Lay It All Down" contains such lines as "a whole lot of people/including myself/thought the story of Moses/was just a tall tale/but all of the things/that we see going on/are just what Moses set down". Thus from a Christian perspective the album should earn an ACCEPTABLE rating.

HIGHEST BILLBOARD ALBUM CHART POSITION: Number 91

HIT SINGLES: None.

Fleetwood Mac in Transition
Danny Kirwan, Bob Welch, and Christine McVie have all penned some cool tunes with a lot of the youth empowerment/ free love themes from the 60's. Future Games is a great CD from the early 70's Fleetwood Mac that was transitioning from the heavy blues origins of the Peter Green era to the almost pure pop of the Buckingham/Nicks era. Some coherent jams with nice guitar work on the longer tunes, some effective slide guitar work on the ballads. Highly recommended.

a classic

The music on here is quite good. The old version of Fleetwood Mac is truly special (well, this isn't the OLDEST version, but it's not exactly the album people remember the band for). I don't know what else to say. It's a special album because the music is very unusual- almost haunting. Half of the album is dominated with quiet, dreamy parts while the other half is just really good upbeat rock music. It's really fascinating.

Pick up Future Games for a taste of old Fleetwood Mac (and in my opinion, the BETTER period of the band compared to the overplayed commercial period). .
