Can't be Beat just about said it all. I think Josh H. There have been some great guitar combinations but Peter Green, Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer are the best in this genere. They've had some other great guitarists but these three broke the mold.
Music fan
Look for the old imports if you want a good idea of the band's power at that time. The older import versions of these shows in Boston are much better in selection of song versions.
Best live classic rock recording I've heard
I was lucky enough to see the original FM twice, once on this tour and then again on the next tour, which featured Christine Perfect (later McVie) in support of Kiln House. . but this band. . . with Green, Kirwin and Spencer was simply the best rock band I ever saw back in the day (and I saw plenty, including Hendrix, Cream, Jethro Tull, Procol Harum, the James Gang, Humble Pie, Mountain etc etc etc). No one even came close to FM's level of dynamics and interaction, they really listened to and played off each other, even more than Bruce, Baker and Clapton. And some of the best stuff is really captured on this recording. Get volume 2 as well, it's almost this good. But this one is the best! Outstanding!.
Then Play On is the holy grail, but this is also great.
However, Then Play On is the quintessential cd of that group. Of the three Live In Boston cd's by the original, aka the real Fleetwood Mac, the Peter Green Fleetwood Mac, this is the best, but get all three. After that, Men of the World: The Early Years is a must have, a 3-cd set including 15-17 minute long live versions of some of their greatest songs, including Green Manalishi, plus lots of other live and studio stuff. The sound quality is superb.
Holy Grail?
After hearing about this famous run at the Boston Tea Party, these disks became like a "holy grail" of sorts to me. I'm a huge fan of 60's guitarists, and I just became obsessed with Peter Green a few months ago. I finally got them as a present, and my expectations were pretty darned high. Luckily, I can say they didn't let me down. I've been listening through headphones on my ipod, and the sound quality is fantastic. Incredibly clear, and the instruments are all separated excellently and sound phenomenal. This volume is fantastic. Most people prefer the Rattlesnake Shake on vol. 2, but the one on here is phenomenal too. In fact, I prefer some of the parts of this one, and in truth they are extremely similar, both following the exact same format and sections. The takes of Black Magic Woman and Jumping at Shadows are both excellent too, and it's pretty cool to hear Peter Green jam away on the six-string bass at the end of The Green Manalishi. All in all, if you like Peter Green you'll definitely want to get this disc, and volume 2 as well.
