The Bridge Between The Old Time Gospel Of Mahalia, Marion, Clara & Others and What Became Known As Contemporary Gospel!!

I would call that a passing of the baton. This album is timeless, powerful, poignant and very very signifigant
in the evolution of gospel! What you are witnessing on this album is not
just soulful and brilliant singing in the true old school gospel tradition,
but also a changing of the guard!---Mahalia Jackson, the reigning and (in my book)
the eternal queen of gospel, passed away right before this album was released in January of 1972,
and Aretha, the heir apparent and reigning queen of soul sang at her funeral.
If that weren't enough, both her mentor in gospel singing, the legendary Clara Ward
and Sister Rosetta Tharpe both passed away in 1973.
Aretha also sang at Clara Ward's funeral.
So if that wasn't the flame being passed on and kept, I don't know what is!
And keep the flame she did!---What you have in this amazing 2-CD set is some
soul-stirring, heaven-inspired, transcendant singing by Aretha accompanied by her
other mentor, the late great and equally revolutionary Rev. James Cleveland and his
very capable Southern California Community Choir!
The arrangements are still moving and anchor Aretha's raise-the-rafters voice to the tee!
This was Aretha when she was ARETHA!!---The unparalleled voice of a generation!
She was without peer during this time. . . before age, weight, cigarettes, etc. ,
took their toll on her once magnificent vocal instrument!---Aretha to the 100th power!
Not only does she make you hear her!---She makes you FEEL HER!!
Just put it on from start to finish and be taken on a spiritual journey!
If ever there was a marking of when the old school gospel became the new school
contemporary kind, then this surely was the first wave!
This album stayed on the R&B/Soul as well as the gospel charts for almost 10 years!
That is a feat that has yet to be topped by anybody in gospel today!
To say that this album is a landmark is an understatement of the highest order!
If you don't already have it, buy it!---You won't regret it!
Let the church say AMEN!! (-: .

It can't Get Better
This is my traveling music I play it in the morning whenever I go on a trip. I purchase this album on vinyl many years ago and wore it out; I also had it on cassette. Aretha is sensational; only Mahalia Jackson tops her. Some will say she sounds a little bluesy but no one really make these songs sound "soul from the heart". She bites into them and you come away uplifted. I am an opera nut by nature and I rank this recording with the likes of the American Dive Miss Leontyne Price when she sings spirituals and hymns. Aretha has never sound better and this is one of her best recordings.

Christian, for one song

Or have some sort of religious experience. So what if I'm a long-term, retreat-going, cushion-sitting, Heart Sutra-chanting, daily-practicing Buddhist?

I defy anyone to listen to the 11-minute rendition of "Amazing Grace" by Aretha and not be Christian for at least 11 minutes.

Wholly holy.

simply outstanding
This is when gospel music was music nothing like the music today, you just dont find good down home church like this anymore. This Is aretha at her best. I memorized this whole CD when I was 6 yrs old and back then it wasn't a CD it was 8 tracks and cassettes. and now that I am 36 I still remeber every lyric every word that should tell you something. If you want down home church get this CD Aretha will not disappoint you
Kudos Aretha!!!!!!.

Aretha's Gospel 70s
It saddens me that the worldly songs were more attractive to her, then God's songs. Since the 70s, when I first heard gospel songs by Aretha, I have been captivated by them. Nevertheless, it was her gospel songs which propelled me into appreciating God more, and loving songs of praises rendered to Him. I was shocked to learn that these old songs were still around. When I listen to her gospel songs, they take me back to a time (the 70s) which I love and still cherish today. If anyone reads this, let me know where to find another gosple song of hers entitled "The Rapture. ".
