Who will wear the Crown?
This album rolls along like thunder in the hills. The Queen Of Soul indeed.
She makes Whitney and Mariah sound like Tom Waits wheezing into a paper bag.
All Aretha's Atlantic albums are essential. Every home should have them.

. this album is excellent; blues, Rhythm & blues, all together in a very good album.

(3.5 stars) Great when she explores her roots, questionable otherwise
So far so good, right? Well, here's the problem: there are some terrible ideas on this record. A generally amusing exploration of Aretha's roots: gospel (the exciting title track; the complex "Pullin'"), blues (a moving cover of "The Thrill is Gone"; "Honest I Do"; "Why I Sing the Blues"), and, of course, some R&B (the hit "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)", sung with enthusiasm; "When This Battle is Over", notable for Duane Allman's guitar licks). In fact, they're more abundant on any preceding Franklin record but Soul '69, I'd wager. Some sap ("That's All I Want from You"; "Oh No, Not My Baby"; "You and Me") - Franklin's ballads are massive hit-or-miss deals. Some of the stock-in-trade R&B isn't too good either: "Try Matty's" is an odd ode to a drug dealer; and believe me, you've heard a billion better songs than "One Way Ticket" that basically did the same thing.

"AS ALWAYS ARETHA DELIVERED, YET ANOTHER 'CLASSIC' ALBUM...AGAIN!!!"
It had gotten to the point Artists' was hoping she (Aretha) DID NOT record their songs, because by the time she'd put her 'touch' to it. By this time EVERYBODY knew what to expect from Aretha, and this project was no different from her past Atlantic albums (Her Originals & Her Legendary Cover Versions). . . It was all over, but the shouting! So on the "Spirit In The Dark" Album it generated a total of 4 Charted Singles! The Title Track, Plus: "The Thrill Is Gone", "Don't Play That Song" & "You And Me", along with Album Favorites: "Try Matty's" & "That's All I Want From You". . . Another SMASH Album! And as always we wanted for the next Aretha Franklin Album. .

Classic Aretha
While it's not her best of her Atlantic albums, it still holds it's own and is very consistent. This is definately an overlooked Aretha Franklin album. Some really inspired cover song choices, the best being her version of "Oh No Not My Baby". This album features the most of her own compositions, 5 in total. She sounds refreshed and overall it's an enjoyable album start to finish.
