Aretha seems "So Damn Happy"!!
Where do I start??. I guess the fact that this CD brings back memories of the "Sparkle" Lp,"Holdin' On" is my favorite track with the grammy award winning track "Wonderful" and the "Groovin" sounding "The Only Thing Missing Is You" are a very close second. . Its also good to see Ree in the drivers seat on her written and produced "You Are My Joy" and the title track in which she plays the piano!!. .

This CD to me as much as I loved "A Rose. . . " fares better because Re steps up to the plate and hits this one out of the park with old school soul, not that she did not do that with "A Rose. . . " its just here she went more in a Soul direction then hip hop. . .

I listen to this CD after what 6 years I still feel the way I felt when it came out. . Arista dropped the ball with this one because the first 5 songs could have been hits with promotion. . "Holdin' On" clearly could have been a top ten R&B hit if it had been released as a single and promoted but the 2000's have not been kind to the legends. . With the little promotion that was done "So Damn Happy" sold over 300,000 copies in the following months after its release and has sold over 400,000 copies to date. . . Just imagine if this was promoted like "A Rose. . " was!!

Oh well at least Ree received a grammy for "Wonderful". . Great CD my Queen!!.

goodies & badies (imo)
Give her songs she can DO ! She's still a fantastic singer but please ACCEPT her limitations, these days. I think that some producers need to calm her down or better said, don't push her so hard to reach those very high keys (anymore). She's 61 for God sake. Why is it a shame that she can't do it anymore just like she sang in the past ? She still can sing like nobody else but with some restrictions.

.

I will remember the way it used to be
She had some clunkers, but that voice could somehow transcend weak songs and production, but this cd and the Rose I parted with. I have loved Aretha Franklin since the sixties, and have purchased anything she put out. No one can take away her greatness, and her place in music history. And if I was to be stranded on a desert island, I would grab my Aretha box set first. Some voices are fragile, a gift from the angels, and when it goes it goes. Some voices improve with time, deepen, thicken, have a life-worn texture. Now is the time for Aretha to know her vocal limitations and give us some music with depth. Take a page out of the Betty Lavette songbook. Stop trying to be current, and give us some soul. You want some great Aretha, get Rare and Unreleased.

The Queen aint what she used to be...but this is still a damn good album!
My mother turned me on to this album. . and for about two months straight it was the only thing in my CD player. I still pop it in from time to time and sing along to the tracks. I have been a long time Aretha fan, but mostly her old classic stuff is what I've favored. With this album, she has proven that she can blend the old and the new. The music doesn't sound dated like she cant let go of the past, but it also doesnt sound like she's trying to record a bunch of songs that shouldve went to Destiny's Child. With the exception of about three songs, I really like this whole album. Aretha's voice isnt clearly what it used to be, but she STILL represents on this album!.

The Queen is... Well, she ain't what she used to be
Comparatively, her previous album ("A Rose. This album is very unimpressive. . . ") is a masterpiece compared to this. The 10 songs are not memorable, just average R&B and pop, with a religious song ("Good News") thrown in. It's almost as bad as the carwreck that was Whitney Houston's ". . . Just Whitney".

The song "Ain't No Way" is not a self-cover of her classic Atlantic recording, it's a new song by Gordon Chambers ("That ain't no way to treat a lady"); seems like they could have given it a different title. \

Giving this album one star is an exageration. .
