I wanted to like it I read lots of reviews of Frusciante's other albums; I heard (I think) that he plays a lot with The Mars Volta, one of my favorites. Really, I did. I assumed that when he sloughed off the Chili Peppers, Frusciante would go wild. Um. . . no. This sounded like re-warmed Chili Peppers music to me--and they lost me about 3 albums ago. I was not excited; not entranced; not even interested.
Total bummer.
john frusciante is amazing
(which is still my favorite song on the album) I've always loved the red hot chili peppers but i had never bought any of john's solo work. I bought this album after i heard unreachable. I mainly bought it because of RHCP. of the two songs i heard, (unreachable and central) i liked them a lot.
When i first listened to the album i was a bit dissapointed by the other material. but as i listened more i liked it more. all the songs are very thought out and meaningful. absolutely no filler. even though i don't quite understand the concept I'm sure it makes sense to mr. Frusciante. all in all great album.
He does it again
It's probably his fullest album yet, combining elements of Curtains, To Record Water, and Shadows. Empyrean is the bomb. Great stuff, and finally. . . . song long songs! .
Great Sound Quality
I don't believe reviews actually influence how other people feel about a certain product. I've always felt writing a review serves no practical purpose. But here I am, writing a review, and I do it because I feel the need to give credit to John for creating an album with such a good sound quality.
Most records these days are mixed and mastered to make everything in it sound "loud", damaging the sound quality permanently (google *loudness war* for more information and see why I wrote *loud* in quotation marks). But The Empyrean is not a victim of this process and as a result, it has a great dynamic range. You can hear every instrument clearly and the differences in volume in the songs are still there to be enjoyed.
The reason I give John credit for this is because I know he not only worked on the music on this album, but also took care of a lot of the technical stuff. Good for him, I say.
Also, the music's pretty sweet! And because it was recorded, mixed and mastered appropriately, you get to actually be able to play it like John advised, as loud as possible, without feeling like your ears will fall off.
Bottom line: The Empyrean is a great listening experience. For me, anyway.
Another brilliant work from John Frusciante - Amazing concept album
'The Empyrean' is quite a bit different from his previous output. I'll start off by saying that I'm a huge fan of John Frusciante's solo output with my favorites being 'Niandra Lades', 'DC EP', 'Curtains' and 'Shadows Collide'. It's more dreamy and certainly more esoteric (if you can believe that anything can be more esoteric than 'Niandra' :)
I had to give it a few listens before I really connected with it. It really is an album that should be listened in its entirety to fully appreciate.
It's an interesting meld of melodic and experimental styles all at once: Quiet, then hits you over the head, then sends you off on a journey and so on.
If you're a John Frusciante fan this is a definite must. If you're looking to delve into his solo work for the first time, you may want to check out 'Shadows Collide' or 'Curtains' for a start then move onto 'Niandra' and 'Empyrean'. Of course, this all depends on your taste as I find all of his output superior and unique work that is unparalleled in this day and age of manufactured corporate music.
Give this brilliant musician a try, you won't regret it!
