Take it real slow, let your love come ... dooowwwn
" I love Gaye's music. Maybe it's better than "What's Going On," definitely it's inferior to "Midnight Love. But its problem, noticeable in these recordings, is, while attractive, it often plods along like a prehistoric beast, and with melodies that aren't quite infectious enough, the songs rarely hit the high notes of real propulsive emotion. An R&B classic just the same. The title track is tremendous, of course, but I think the best song might be "You Sure Love to Ball," inconspicuously sandwhiched between one he wrote during the "What's Going On" sessions and one foreshadowing the demise of Marvin's marriage to Anna Gordy. Political statement of Gaye's life: "Would you rather make love now children/Than make war?".

Let's Get It On
From start to finish Marvin is on a roll and the 8 tracks are as close to perfect as any album I have in my collection. This album is my 2nd favorite Marvin album and it's one of the most satisfying listening experiences I've ever had.

The thing that I love about Marvin is that as one of the producers, he was able to shape the songs and in a sense-harmonize with himself so that at times it sounds like 3 different people singing instead of just him and because the album tells a story of sorts, each song just flows perfectly from one to the other and each song is absolutely the definition of "timeless music".

Although at 8 tracks, it is a relatively short album to listen to in entirety but my "press repeat" tracks are:

IF I SHOULD DIE TONIGHT - absolutely stunning. Everytime I hear this song I think of the first time I truly heard it and listened to the lyrics & cried. This is such a beautiful love song!

JUST TO KEEP YOU SATISFIED - another stunner, vocally Marvin sounds incredible and the lyrics just lay bare his crumbling marriage. I was surprised to learn that he'd written this song with his estranged wife, Anna as they were having major marital problems.

COME GET TO THIS - mellow track that gets my head bobbing.

LET'S GET IT ON - classic Marvin!

Finally an honorable mention to DISTANT LOVER - although I love the live version on his LIVE AT THE LONDON PALLADIUM album, this song is a favorite of mine as well.

To those trying to build a Marvin Gaye, r&b or overall music collection, this is Marvin at his best and I'd highly recommend it.

Looking for Living Room Love? Listen Here
It's almost impossible to fathom why a musical genius like him suffered so much in real life and yet sounded and demonstrated absolute mastery in his music. Marvin Gaye existed on another plane. Let's Get It On continues where What's Going On left off - with Marvin completely in the creative zone. Predating Sexual Healing by quite a few years, Let's Get It On was no doubt an instant classic, channelling Timeless Soul and Living Room Love into a seamless sophisticated package. Play this seamlessly from start to end, and then press play again.

Only Marvin Gaye could sing the lines he did and not make it cliched. He meant what he sang. Gaye's albums were tour de forces that work better than his compilations by taking listeners into a world of musical depth and soul; and different directions which were truly ahead of its time, yet of its time.

Note: The 2 Disc Deluxe Edition is great but very long but probably worth it for the liner notes. If Marvinphiles can't get enough, that's the edition to go for.

old school music
It is music that all generations like to hear; music that will always be around. Music from this era had to truly be inspired. this particular recording is still being played, the words are relavent to today, and the music is still soul stirring. the new stuff, will pass on, and no one will hardly remember the words, but this is stuff that will last. .

all you have to say is...MARVIN!!!
Up to this point in my life(over half a century), no other male SOUL-R/B-JAZZ-POP singer has staked his claim over Marvin, his body of work is insurmountable. . , what impresses as much if not more than Marvin's vocal stylings and lyrics, are the creation and composition of the Background vocals, on "Let's get it On" and more specifically. . . "I Want You", I have not heard anything, ANYTHING, close to being as good as or better!
IF ever in his lifetime he wanted to create Music as close to God and Perfection that he could make. . . in my humble opinion, "I Want You" is that is just that. . . .
