My white album
. 4 1/2

Few, few recordings (especially doubles) sound as good, for long, as this-one of rock's most haunted conceptual masterpieces- possessing enough pockets of perfection to often come out on top in their spectacular first-half discography amongst fans.

When I die I hope I can take this album with me...
Yes, I am serious! Of course, there are other albums by other bands, which have more hits or more listening potential to the casual music fan. "The Lamb", as any true fan of early Genesis refers to this masterpiece, is possibly the greatest rock album of all time. There are other albums that are actually better "rock and roll" albums. . . but if you want to experience something mystical; something almost spiritual in nature; a musical experience that will take you on a different journey every time you listen to it, this album is for you. If you are strictly a pop, metal, straight up rock n roller you may find this album hard to listen to at first. Some of you may never go back to it. . . but I promise you that if you give this album a good listening to from beginning to end you will find that every vocal, percusion, guitar, bass, synth/keyboard track; every note on this album is almost divine. I have been listening to this album since I was a kid in the early eighties, I bought it in 1982 (yes, eight years after it's release) and have never grown tired of listening to it. Every time I listen to it I find something new or go on a different journey. I have actually bought this album over eleven times because each time I lent it to a friend or colleague I never got it back. In fact, I would lend it out knowing that the person who was borrowing it was going to keep it and I didn't care because this album needs to be spread around the world. This music was not written it was composed as any great symphony was composed, it is that good.
The music on "The Lamb" needs to be listened to by anyone who calls himself or herself a lover of good music. If you are a musician, as am I, you must listen to this album. . . I promise you, you will devour it. Much as Peter Gabriel's "So" album has become a timeless classic, "The Lamb" is in the same league. . . if not above it. I can't say enough about this wonderful piece of art except that when I die, if there really is an afterlife, I hope that I can still listen to "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". .

remaster sound
I am more interested in reporting that the sound on this remaster is much better then the cd I already had- which was kind of muffled and distracted from the brillance of the cd. this is Genisis at thier best- much like Pink floyds the wall this is a departure from thier "sound" and a great concept cd. It was well worth the money to get the imporved crisper sound- and I'm a cheep a**, at $9. 00 + shipping it ws still less expensive then the $20 I paid for the ealier version at a used cd store- so if your wondering if the remaster sound is woth it YES!!!!.

3 stars for Gabriel, 5 for the others
I enjoy all eras of Genesis music, but while Gabriel is certainly a great musical talent (particularly compositionally), he is not the reason I'm a Genesis fan. I first got into Genesis' music with the Collins era (DUKE), and my favorite of their albums are those with Hackett but without Gabriel. Most of what I enjoy about Gabriel-era Genesis has to do with what the others besides Gabriel contributed.

LAMB is the one Genesis album most controlled by Gabriel. The story is original and often fascinating, but it's the haunting music that makes this album great. The only song that Gabriel's contribution really makes for me is "Broadway Melody of 1974" (this starts with the line "Echoes of the Broadway Everglades"; many CDs have this indexed wrong). Many of the songs sound like they could have been staggeringly great if they retained their mood while having lyrics that weren't enslaved to Gabriel's story. This is especially true of tracks like "The Lamia" where the lyrics make me go "Ewwwww!"

If you're a Gabriel fan, you must have this. If you're fan of progressive-era Genesis, you must have this. If you're more of a Collins-era Genesis fan, you should at least check it out.
