way too much compression
I am speaking about the SACD layer only as that is why I bought this disc! I have many other SACD recordings and take great pleasure in rediscovering emotions through them, but I find this mix extremely lacking in bass, and the recording completely saturated. I am an old fan of Genesis from way back, but I have to say that this re-mixed version of A trick of the Tail is one that I get no pleasure at all in listening to. Not at all as how I remember the original. A very disappointing re-mix of a super album.

Great surround mix but the CD layer is compressed beyond the bounds of sanity
Phil Collins' vocals are a revelation here and I have to say that even though I've been listening to this album for about 25 years, I now have a totally different take on the vocals on this album - they are stunning. First of all, I have to say that there are many impressive aspects to this release:

1. And they are also (finally) much more forward in the mix and stripped of the dated echo and reverb effects. This is a good thing.

2. The surround mix itself is outstanding and I'm glad to see that these audio engineers are finally mastering the art of making great 5. 1 mixes, and without feeling the need to ping-pong the instruments all over the room.

3. Mad Man Moon never ceases to amaze me. I can't believe that this song is not regarded as one of their all-time high points.

However. . . the CD layer is another story. When I listened to the CD layer for the first time, I honestly thought that there was something wrong with my receiver. Basically, every single dynamic peak on the album is lopped off, and not subtly either. The drums on "Squonk" had always sounded so powerful, now they sound like tin cans. The sound during the intro to "Dance on a Volcano" actually drops out momentarily during the peaks in the intro - I laughed out loud the first time I heard this. Is this some kind of joke? I honestly think that FM radio has less compression than the CD layer here. I can't imagine that anyone related to the band actually approved this, as it is downright amateurish at best. Even though the compression may make the cymbals sound nice and give the music added brightness, as far as musical reproduction is concerned, it's an abomination. I was expecting the CD layer to be a 2006 remaster, transferred to digital from the original tapes using the latest digital converters - man, what a letdown. Having said that, the previous Definitive Remaster CD IS damned well done and does the job anyway.

Audiophiles, take heed if you're buying this in hopes of getting a definitive 2-channel version of this album. You already own one.

And I absolutely cringe when I try to imagine what the "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" album will sound like when it is similarly "improved. ".

I almost give 5 stars
Why i do not give 5 stars ?
- I wish I could enjoy a completed cinema show video. WITHOUT CHARLIE CHAPLIN movie. .
- I wish I could enjoy a completed super's ready videw. . WITHOUT THE WAR PLANE. .

Related SACD and DTS 96/24, I love the sound quality. . I'm thinking to purchase the SACD Duke Album.
