Bring Back Britpop!! I think the first half of the disc is more memorable than the last, but any fans of Coldplay or James will truly dig this. Along with a slew of other Brit and Euro-pop bands that came out in the mid to late 90's, Geneva's debut just soars to me. Really great stuff with a great vocalist.
Geneva captures the Britpop spirit
The influences on 'Further' tend to repeat itself, only because they're that obvious, fortunately for Geneva. . not bad company to be compared to. The guitar-work combines the jangly-riffs of The Smiths and fluidity of Suede, shades of Echo and The Bunnymen, set to the uppity pace of James. Yes the vocals sound a tad like Tim Booth, but it's really a nice compliment to the lush guitar sound, combining textbook Britpop swagger with swooning Embrace-like strings/ballads. 'Further' shows alot of promise, but the album gradually peeters-out as being a tad formulaic. But when all is said is done, it's really the gems that outshine the dull edges.
madly in love with
their legenary debut left me speechless & kept haunting me until now. i get so let-down in "weather underground" ,which is a failure except for "if u have to go". "best regrets" & " tranquilizer" are uplifting & passionate, "fall apart button" & "wearing off" are melancholy & spacey. the vocal just goes perfectly with the music of Geneva,i can't single out a song i dun like from "further".
Its good...sure tis. Not great tho.
They are interesting but. I like this band, I really do. . . they sound like the kitchens of distinction to me. A lot. The singer is better here, and the songs sometimes are too. Its a good investment for a cd collection, the singles like into the blue are super. I equate them to KOD in that the good songs are great, the bad ones are really bad. But, what band isnt like that?.
in the future, all music will be this spectacular.
Lets just hope they don't fall prey of the legendary 'second album syndrome'. Assured without being brash, impossibly elegant, but not snobbish, Further is a fantastic debut from an awe inspiring band. This is truly a band to fall in love with.
