Small-time debut, and all the better for it. The lack of production tricks like strings and electronic flourishes that became commonplace on their later albums is gone here, and its a good thing. With The Get Up Kids debut, one thing is obvious compared to their later recordings. These songs would suffer if the producer had tried to introduce these elements, because these songs are not written in that style. These are youthful, energetic songs that sound completely different from later GUK albums, but that doesn't diminish the fact that these are wonderfully written songs. This is not a perfect debut by any stretch of the imagination, but it is quite an accomplishment.
You have to understand the greatness.
It was recorded in a total of 2 days while the band members were about to graduate High School. You have to understand the way this album was recorded and the topics of which they are singing to truly enjoy it. I am a seventeen year old high schoo kid and understand their lyrics, they pertain to me in many ways. I highly highly reccomend this album if you are a high school kid who likes good music, or if you are a 30 year old dude who remember's his glory days. Whatever the case the album is a classic. Sure, his voice cracks on some songs, The band is emo, but that's the beauty of the album. "Last Place You Look" is my favorite song on the album. If you don't have this album by now settle for the remastered version and pick it up. You won't regret it.
One of the best albums ever made
Thats how much I love this cd. First off i want to say that i've bought this cd probably 3or 4 times due to friends losing it or me ruining it. The get up kids play some great stuff this time around. To me the guitars on this cd sound so awesome and original. The singer has a great voice too (kind of like the singer from coheed or kid brother collective. This is an emo album, but its great because while it has its slow parts, all the sudden the band will just start rocking out. The music is usually just standard power chords and octaves, but does have some catchy riffs. The drummer plays real standard stuff though but it gets the job done. Other than this i would definitley recommend their ep titled woodson, or even "something to write home about" I would not recommend their albums "on a wire" which is just horrible and nothing like their old stuff. I also wouldn't recommend their latest album "guilt show" either. If you're into emo or just great rock you will definitely love this. I got friends of mine who only listen to rap and techno into these guys. Also if you get this and like what you hear, check out kid brother collective. Its around the same line as the get up kids but not as great.
God Bless Emo
There is not much i can really say about this that hasnt been said. . . Yes this album is alluringly rough around the edges, yes this album very much grows on you, yes this is emo. And we all love emo right?
I have owned this album for what seems like forever and always dismissed it up till now. I play it over and over and over to the extent that all my friends know every word due to over exposure.
This is a much harder and grittier sound that retains some of the "Core" of emo. Unlike some of the pretty keyboards on . . . Home About, this is all about rocking guitars and more strained vocals.
Were i to criticise i would moan about the lack of any shouting in any of the choruses. I would moan about the fact that it isnt the heaviest emo i have ever heard and they arent quite Saves The Day. But if you like your emo lite, than this is the band to try! .
And I'm predicting
Let me start this by saying I like the Pixies, I like Sonic Youth, and I like Mike Patton. The use of the word emo in any of these reviews, see I did it too. Guess what else, that's right this album. A limited taste in elitism ain't no fun. This album is rough, it takes awhile, but I'll be damned if I kind of like it better than Something to Write home about. So yeah, the trademark emo vocals, fine, but they have a lot more depth than you think. I mean sure I could sit around and listen to Led Zepplin albums for the rest of my life and never try something else and I haven't listened to these guys in awhile, but that doesn't diminish the quality of this album. .
