Customer Reviews
Introduction to Diz
Excellent introduction to various facets of Dizzy's work - be-bop, latin jazz, big bands, small groups, colaboration with Parker, Eldridge and others, playing, (jocular) singing. .
Hargrove's accompanying notes are not very informative but his sellection is excellent.
Have cd will excite.

First & Favorite of Dizzy Gillespie
Roy Hargrove has some very insightful comments on the 'joy' in Dizzy's music, and reflecting on that I couldn't agree more. This was the first CD I owned of Dizzy Gillespie, and still remains one of my all-time favorites! It'd definitely be on my 10 cds to take with me to a desert island. Diz's work is upbeat and energetic throughout, and his ballads have that essence of catharsis to them that I love. Being a Jazz Trumpeter I cnanot help but be in awe of Diz all throughout and simply mark this album as one of my all-time favorites. (To the track 'Ool-Ya-Koo': Damn! I wish I could do that!).

Good Collection of Dizzie's Later Works
This being the case, this album has a different feel than his previous more jazzy material. This is a solid collection of Dizzie's later material. Most of these selections are from the mid to late fifties and that fifties be-bop swing sound was prevalent in those days, and Dizzie followed in that trend. However, the music is still good. Also, these are selections that were chosen by the trumpet player Roy Hargrove. So these are probably tunes that had an influence on his own playing. One of the better tracks is titled Bloomdido. This track is a Charlie Parker track that includes Buddy Rich on the drums. These guys are all over the place on this track. Overall this is a really nice collection of music with some great artists included in the cuts.
