Customer Reviews Unstylish and unhistorical Perhaps the main reason for this is Naxos’ decidedly unhistorical stance with regard to Vivaldi’s music. The relationship between the Naxos label and the composer Antonio Vivaldi appears to have been a difficult one. This led to them, in their pioneer years at least, recording transcriptions of Vivaldi pieces on instruments for which they were not intended and with ensembles that appear to have had not even an inkling of historical performance practice or of Baroque music theory. There were some exceptions, and some of Naxos’s Vivaldi CDs are highly entertaining despite their inaccuracies, but unfortunately this one is not among their number. Not all of Brazilian soloist Dagoberto Linhares’s skill on the guitar can make up for the weaknesses in other departments: the Slovakian crew of the Camerata Cassovia here reverts to a style of playing which I have elsewhere described as “provincial”, with over-romantic notions of tempo being combined with what, to my ears, sounds like very homely playing. The three Vivaldi concertos here recorded were all written for other instruments entirely (violin, lute, mandolines), and although the guitar versions may sound fair enough, this is so far from a baroque sound as to make any early music enthusiast get rather hot under the collar. The Giuliani concerto was at least intended for guitar and orchestra, but does not sound really inspired, being rather popular than classical; and the Torroba sonatina, perhaps the most interesting piece on the programme, is so different in style from the rest of the disc as to make me wonder why anyone would include it here.
well performed baroque guitar concertos
