How did this slip by?" This title showed up on a pile of promo CDs so I grabbed it more out of curiosity than anything. Once upon a time I worked for a video distributor that was also a music "one-stop. I had had GE's Moontan album which, other than Radar Love, I thought was pretty lousy. I also really liked Twilight Zone. Anyway. . . . I took it home. Plopped it on the old CD player and boy was I surprised. This is one of the best CDs I own. I love every song on it. The recording and production are great. The musicianship is top shelf as well. I've probably had this CD for at least 10 years and I still listen to it without hesitation.
I notice the reviews posted here are all over the place. Some, like myself, think it's the bee's knees while others think it's the pits. I can't figure out why. No matter what rock band I use as a standard (Led Zeppelin included) this thing holds it's own. It helps that they have 2 strong vocalists so it eliminates the whole "one dimensional" problem certain bands suffer from. As I mentioned earlier, the musicianship is great but the guitar playing in particular is outstanding. The drums are recorded to make them sound like cannons so you really get that monster sound.
If there is any downside to the songs it's that they follow the basic verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, verse, chorus format. But what the put in the format is outstanding. For my money any one of these songs could have been pulled for radio play and would have been decent sized hits. If you can get your hands on a copy, go for it. It's well it.

Bloody good CD, guys!
I have since owned much of their work, and while it's difficult to critique each album'a rank within their extensive catalog, I can say that 'Bloody Bucaneers' definitely ranks as one of their top 5 or 6 studio efforts. I've been an Earring fan since the days of 'Radar Love' and they have been my favorite artist since 'To the Hilt', when I had only four of their albums.
This CD is one of their 'rockers', where they leave the progressive and experimental stuff aside and concentrate on delivering melody driven rockers and ballads, and do it with a style that, even when derivative of other artists, is distinctly Golden Earring.
Standout tracks are many, including the title track, 'Making Love to Yourself', 'Going to the Run', 'Joe', 'One Shot Away from Paradise', 'In a Bad Mood', and 'Pouring My Heart Out Again'. Each of those songs are sonderful stand-alone songs that would be at home onhen Love most rock radio stations. "Temporary Madness" and "Planet Blue" are decent songs that are just a bit below the aforementioned tracks, the former being a bit formulaic and the latter having too comservative a structure (though the guitar work is great). 'When Love Turns to Pain' is the weakest cut in my opinion, but it is not without merit. (In fact, if it were on some of their lesser CD's, it would probably be one of the better tracks. )
The main criticism I have is that this CD might be a bit TOO radio-friendly. Golden Earring really shines brightest when they mix these kinds of rock senesibilites with more 'uncomfortable' and diverse musical stylings, which produce music that may not hit you the first time you hear it, but instead grows on you over repeated listens.

Oh my, I like this one!
Slip on out of the twilight zone and give this a listen, I bet you'll like it!. Bloody Buccaneers by Golden Earring is an excelent cd from front to back.
One of their best !
Bloody Buccaneers rounds out all of what they are in one modern album. GE's best album since Moontan. A lot of people think they are trying to copy other groups but what most do not realize, A lot of group surely were listing to them, Brian Adam's outright stole some of George's riffs. Fleetwood Mac took Caesar's drum setup. This is one of their most successful albums in Europe. Sony was just plain stupid not to promote and release this in the US at the time. Aerosmith ask them to tour with them that year but GE turned them down because to the success of this album in Europe. I saw this group in the seventies play with Aerosmith then with Foghat and they blew both of them off the stage. Then again in the 80's with Rush and people were screaming for Rush to get off and bring Earring back out !
Golden Earring celebrated their 47th anniversary in 2008 and have been performing almost continuously since their foundation in 1961.
Bad Album ? WHAT !
I have everyone starting from 1965 and this one does what cut album tried to do. I have to agree with reviewer 2 this is one great album. This was the 1st album not released in the USA at the time which was just plain stupid for Sony records. Aerosmith ask them to tour with them that year but GE turned them down do to this being such a big album for them in the homeland. They were bigger than ever without even selling a album in the US ! buy this one along with No Promises No Debts .
