Good, not great
As with most of GE's albums, about half the songs are good, the rest are OK. If you are on board with Golden Earring's 70s and 80s output, then this is a good addition to your collection. There are a few cringe-worthy moments, as with most of GE's albums, but enough good to balance it out. .


One of their best
"Clear Nite Moonlight" is a great 80's dance/disco song with a fast, catchy beat, "I'll Make It All Up To You" has some of the most emotional guitar playing at the end, "Enough Is Enough" is typical 80's rock that feels like Billy Idol lite, and "Mission Impossible" is a rock song with a disco rythm. "When The Lady Smiles" is Golden Earring's second-greatest song, after "Twilight Zone". Not every song is great, but the good songs make up for the bad. Overall "NEWS" is one of GE's best studio albums, up there with Bloody Buccaneers, Moontan, and Cut. .


One of my favorite GE albums, easily
They're extremely talented, and they've been around longer than The Stones, but they have so many songs that range from "ok" to "horrible". Golden Earring certainly can be a fustrating band to follow. Albums like
'Contraband', 'No Promises, No Debts', 'Switch', and early albums like 'Just Earrings' and 'Miracle Mirror' have very little or nothing at all to offer. NEWS, on the other, hand is one of their albums that I can enjoy all the way from start to finish. Okay, so the odd rap-like title track isn't so hot, but who can argue with the likes of "When The Lady Smiles", "I'll Make It All Up To You", and "Clear Nite Moonlight"? And "Mission Impossible", while NOT a hit, even in their home country, stands as the only GE song other than their two main hits that I've heard on the radio here in the States. That was pretty exciting, I have to say.
Basically, Golden Earring rocks, but you have to wade through a lot of crap to get to the good stuff. Honestly, very rarely do you come across an album of theirs that is solid from start to finish, like Bloody Buccaneers, Moontan, Cut, and Together. For me, N. E. W. S is enjoyable all the way through, but if you're not into 80's music, you might disagree. .
