closer to home
It was exactly what we wanted, it was very difficult to find in the open market.

Great Grand Funk Railroad Album, Even Better With Remastering
Many of the songs here, including the Top 40 single "I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home" and "Aimless Lady", have become standards on such classic rock stations as WPYX, KZOK, WCSX, KISM, WQUS, WCMF, WGRF, KGON, KLPX, KFEG, WPDH, WRXK, KQMT and many others. CLOSER TO HOME is a great Grand Funk Railroad album that's now even better with warm, crisp, thick remastering. Even lesser known songs such as "Sin's A Good Man's Brother" sound a clarion call for peace, love, and understanding that even today might inspire a high school boy not to reject an ordinary girl in favor of the cheerleading captain. Moreover, the fact that past and present members have supported recent efforts to free Americans detained in Iran and North Korea on false charges makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

closer to perfection
Grand Funk Railroad changed their style by including some soulful vocal melodies for the Closer to Home album, and while the title song takes me back to my childhood and the summertime memories connected to it, the REST of the album deserves just as much attention and appreciation that the title song receives. Whether this was a commercial album or not, I don't really care.

Now I have to sit here and wonder why people aren't mentioning the rest of the songs from the album in the same breath as the title song, when they are ALL just as good as the title song if you ask me.

The band changed for this album with the mellow songwriting and the soulful style, but it's in NO way worse than the classic hard rock/blues guitar workouts that appeared frequently on the previous two GFR albums.

A really good album Closer to Home is, and the fact the band changed their style into one that includes a noticeable soul influence doesn't make it any worse than the previous albums (or future ones for that matter) that have gone on to become near classics for many people. Closer to Home is just an album that's a bit different from the previous ones, and the album caught the band in between that stage when they were changing their style a little bit. I love it.

Those were the days!
I remember it most because the song "I'm your captain/closer to home" played over and over on the PA system the day my ship returned home after an eleven month deployment overseas. I bought this album when it came out in 1970. Yep, will never forget that day! .

For die-hard fans of this group. Great memories here with all the songs I listened to growing up. Great listening.
