Experimental Funk Considered in the entirety of GFR's catalogue, Girls adds rich variety to GFR's sound and comes closest to the "Funk" genre. While many fans and critics of GFR consider All the Girls in the World Beware an artistic failure for the boys from Flint, I find it's R&B/Pop flavor refreshing, interesting and satisfying. If you are new to GFR, don't be put off by the reviews of this fine album. The music consistently flows from beginning to end; the musicianship is first rate; GFR takes an experimental step preventing stagnation; the album is far from boring.
So far I haven't read anything like what I am about to say!
etc. I bought all of the Grand Funk albums many moons ago, hearing them, playing them to death, talking about them with my friends and trading, recording, swapping etc. all through the early 70s. . But the post Terry Knight albums, such as this one, I bought immediately upon release (starting with Phoenix). When ATGITWB was released, it screamed CREATIVITY. Just as they did with "Shinin On", the group needed some sort of creative edge to stay in the game, and they achieved it by mixing dark soul with heavy metal and ballads. Those albums including "Born To Die" were strange for those of us who were used to the "Closer To Home" brand of Grand Funk, but I must say that I loved those post Knight albums most of all because they demonstrated Grand Funk's ability to change and avoid becoming stale in the ruthless competitive world of rock music in the mid 70s. .
seventies rock !
Well there I was - transported back to the seventies listening to this album on vinyl through headphones - actually this is a great album if you want easy listening rock in the background - ignore the crass cover art and settle in for an half hour or so of classic Grand Funk - ollie brooks.
oh my goodness
Grand Funk Railroad is one rock band that NEVER should have tried changing with the times. I am one of the biggest fans of 70's rock music you can imagine, which is why I tend to defend even the average albums as having a few enjoyable moments here and there, but I simply refuse to accept All the Girls in the World Beware as ANYTHING other than a major disappointment and a horrible album. There were signs of a change with "Shinin' On", but for the most part the songs were pretty good regardless. THIS album however, shows a band trying to sound commercial without having ANY of the good qualities that made the band popular a few years before this albums release.
"Responsibility" with its Sesame Street-like vocals make my stomach turn. What the heck is THIS garbage? "Runnin" would have been better without the cheesy and obnoxious horns (though granted, the horns remind me of a song I actually love by Golden Earring called "The Devil Made Me Do It". "Life" sounds like the bands weak attempt at writing a song similar to what they've been doing up to this point, but something sounds REALLY wrong with it. The production I believe is the problem with the song. It's too loud, too obviously trying to keep up with the times.
But NOTHING bothers me more than "Good and Evil". What am I supposed to make of this? Vocals that are just horrible because they sound like nothing that really resembles a melody, and guitar playing that never goes anywhere. This song is just pointless. The whole album is pointless. I'm very disappointed a band that made such classics from the Survival and Phoenix albums would release something like this. Only the two songs at the end of the album -both major hits in their day- make me feel like this isn't completely forgettable. Skip this album please.
Mediocre album
They really lost it after Locomotion. Title track is pretty good, the weak ballads are always on the radio. The bodybuilder on the right, under the sticker is Ah-nold the Governor of California.
