Great Then, Great Now
Oh, I know her next release, Heart in Motion, would overshadow this release as far as number of copies sold. It's hard to believe 20 years have passed since this great CD first hit store shelves. But for my money, this is Amy Grant at her best.

One reason this disc is so great is that it sounds timeless. Yes, it was released in 1988, but you have to listen close to catch the 80's influence. Yes, it is there, most noticeably on the title track or "Shadows. " But it is kept to a minimum most of the time. Heck, piano is the predominant instrument in the beautiful ""If These Walls Could Speak. " And there are lots of strings and guitar, too.

But the lyrics are good, too. Amy struggles here between faith, love, and how humans actually behave. "1974" opens the disc talking about the joy of her confusion. But then comes the title track that incorporates imagery of slavery and the holocaust between cries to find a place where people aren't cruel to each other. That theme is picked up again in "What About the Love" in which Amy sees how we give power to the strong and wonders where love is in our world.

True, a couple of the tracks haven't aged well due solely to Amy's personal life. I just can't listen to "Faithless Heart" and "Sure Enough" without thinking about her divorce and remarriage. Judgmental of me? Probably. But I can't help it.

When I first got this project, I got it on tape. It only had ten of the twelve songs on the CD. As a result, "Wait for the Healing" and "If You Have to Go Away" both seem odd to me to this day. Which is a shame because they are great pop songs.

And I can't leave out the one rocker, "All Right. " This song of faith perfectly balances out some of the doubt.

I consider this the biggest transition in Amy's career. It's still a Christian project, but I'm not sure God is mentioned once. As a result, anyone can join her journey of exploration of the lines between good and evil in our world.

Yes, time has been good to this disc. Every time I pull it out, I listen to it multiple times in a row. I expect to keep being encouraged and challenged by it for years to come.

Long Songs!
After that the quality has been declining. This album lasts about 60 minutes and it has only 12 songs! You could say that it doesn't matter that the songs are long but hey if half of the songs are quite boring, it does matter! I am real fan of Amy Grant's early years, from her first to "Age to Age" she made four great albums. "Lead Me On" has some of good songs but some of the songs are quite boring and long. Amy Grant has still a great voice but I was disappointed when I heard this album for the first time. Even the next times didn't bring anything new for me. What you can say? Get "Age to Age" or "My Father's Eyes" instead.

Amy Grant at her best and most honest
It's honest and true and all the songs seem to dovetail from one to the other. This is probably one of my favorite albums of all time. The simplicity of some of the arrangements and the emotion in the vocals is just amazing. "Faithless Heart" is one of the most heartfelt songs I've ever heard; it just breaks your heart. It's amazing that Lead Me On came after the enourmously successful, but more pop-oriented Unguarded. It's depth and complexity is lighyears away from that album. Of all the albums that Amy Grant has recorded, this may be the one that will live on long after she's left this world.

When real life becomes music
Not only the music styles and arrangements are great and diversified, but we're here before a very honest capacity to put simple experiences of life into writing. One of the best and personal album Amy Grant has ever released. An amazing album where Amy shares with us a clear and very honest approach of the main topics we're faced with on a daily basis. I love the lyrics of "What about the Love?". That's exactly what it's all about: love. A song every single person, wether believer or not, should read and make his/hers. Amy puts here the level of Christ-like values & standards at his highest expression, maybe expressed in a different way than to what we're used to hear inside church walls, but extremely faith-challenging. I feel concerned any time I listen to "Faithless heart", not only as a child of God but also as a 32 years old husband and father. I'm not surprised that this album was critically acclaimed when it was released back in 1988. Amy Grant was at the top of her artistic talent and had become a mother for the first time. And still, how mature and honest she was! I rarely like an album from 1st to last track, but this is to me one of the best Christian album ever. I know many other artists have dared to explore the same area but this artist is for sure a pioneer on her own. Our Christian walk isn't always made of successes but also of moments of trials that shape and change us in order to become stronger and also wiser. Not only for ourselves but for the way we look at others.
You won't only be delighted by this album but also spiritually and musically enriched ;-).

Stunning
Sharp, you have said it perfectly! I discovered this album in 1995 at 13 years of age; it opened my heart and my mind and has remained my favourite album ever since. J. I have an incredible music collection but I have never heard another album like this one. There is a current that runs through these songs, making them sound as if they truly belong together to create one breathtaking piece of work. I will never tire of these songs. I have heard them thousands of times and this album holds a space in my life and in my heart that no other album could ever hold.

I am not a Christian. I am, however, a believer that whatever hardships we may face in life, love will ultimately prevail. That is the message in this album, one that people of all religions (or no religion at all) can relate to. It is for this reason that I, myself, consider it not a "Christian" album, but a "faith" album. It belongs in every music lover's collection. To anybody who gives this album a chance, I promise you, you will be telling your friends about it.
