In All Their Live Glory
Even if you are not a tie-dyed in the wool Deadhead, you may find a lot to like in this recording, especially if you have a soft spot in your heart for the psychedelic '60s. This is an HDCD-encoded 4-CD set of music recorded live at the Fillmore East in April, 1971.

From the opening "Truckin'" right on through the final notes of "We Bid You Goodnight," many of the classic Dead tunes are presented in all their live glory. Yes, there are times when things sound a little sloppy, but for the most part, the band is really cooking and the "hits" (which of course none of these tunes were, at least for the Dead themselves) just keep on coming.

If nothing else, this 4-CD set is amazing in that it document the fact that already in 1971, the Dead could already perform so many tunes that have came to be identified with them over the next 25 years or so. My goodness, what a prolific band!.

Amazing Stuff
The sound is crisp and immediate(exceeding any of the Dick's Picks), Pigpen is in wonderful form (and a delight to hear), the band is as tight as ever, the music as varied, and one gets a sense of the door closing on what was a beautiful chapter in the Dead's history. I've invested in a few of the Grateful Dead's box set live recordings lately, this being the one I have enjoyed the most. As the man said himself, there are "moments of blinding brilliance" to be found herein.

Near the End of an Era.
I still liked them sort of; but the affair was over. I just want to say that after pig died I stopped being in love with the band. They just got to cute after that. Pig gave them edge. Everyone knows that.
Does anyone remember the New Years show that was simulcast on FM and Public TV. That was a great show. Must have been 70 or 71. R. I. P. Ron.

THIS IS DEAD ALBUM I LISTEN TO MOST OFTEN
Everyone is playing clearly and with lots of heart. i believe this is the greatest album of The Dead sounding their best of anything out there currently. Pigpen never sounded better and this album is a tribute to his musical abilities. Disc 1 is the single greatest disc of Dead music that exists in my opinion. The recording is extremely clear. I am floored every time I listen to this album. I truly believe The Dead's ocean wave crested at the time of these performances. Thanks Pigpen.
