Great CD
I love it. This is the 5th GBS CD I have purchased. There are fewer traditional songs, but that's ok because I also have Rant and Roar. Although it is mostly original material and a little 'poppier' sounding, it is still in keeping with their sound - bodhran, accordian, tin whistle etc. My favorite song is 'Let It Go'. It's about not stressing over the small stuff! Great message! See these guys in concert if you ever get the chance. They are fantastic!.

Love it, love it, love it
As a long-time fan who has always preferred their original songs to their traditional ones, this album just hits the spot. This is, hands down, my favorite Great Big Sea album. It's incredibly upbeat, fun to sing along to, and I never get sick of it. There are one or two tracks that I could do without ("John Barbour" and "Helmethead"), that's just a question of personal taste. On the whole, I think that this album is very strong. I've used it to introduce a number of my friends to Great Big Sea, and have had a lot of success. I recommend it highly.

Change Isn't a Dirty Word
To me, this is their strongest album to date. Agreed, there is a lack of traditional fare, but the rock feel of this album is far from unwelcome. After all, you can only listen to sea shanties for so long before wanting variety.

Their name fits
They're definitely back on their game with this CD. Personally, I call them the "Goofy Newfies", because of their quirky humor and rocked out take on the trads. Could have stood a few more traditionals here, but "Something Beautiful" is a very upbeat and listenable CD.

Probably my favorites are "Helmethead" for its wry humor and "Beat the Drum" because it's a wonderful anthem of youth. And isn't "Love" grand? It's definitely more real than most of the syrupy stuff you hear.

A Great Big Treat for fans of melodic folk-rock
I say give the lads their due for showing the versatility of their songwriting and vocal skills on this gem of a release. While some GBS fans may take issue with the lack of traditional Newfoundland music on this disc (compared with other GBS releases), "Something Beautiful" stands on its own merits as a superbly crafted, melodic folk-rock album with not a single clunker on it. Outstanding and highly recommended whether you're a traditionalist fan or not. With GBS, no matter what they record, everything shines.
