Better than Zeppelin live While awesome, I always came away with the feeling the moved toooooo far from the studio sound of the songs they sang. I have seen Led Zeppelin in concert back in the '70's at the Philadelphia Spectrum. Great white sounds nearly identical to the studio versions of the somgs they present on this album. Purist Led Z fans hate when I say that Jack and Great White do a better job live than Led Zeppelin. Sorry, that is just my opinion. This is a tremendous CD.
Great White's LZ cover albums
Just wondering if it is the same thing! I have some songs on an early promo LP. Does anyone know if this is the same as the later released Great White Salutes Led Zeppelin? Amazon states it was released in 2005 on the Legacy label. I think I will get the Tribute To set first.
Stays true to the Classics
I got this because it caught my eye, I remember them on MTV eons ago doing an excellent cover of 'Babe, I'm gonna Leave You' (which is NOT on here ??), and it was economical. I am not the 'Zep is GOD' type, nor do I like tribute discs or rip offs. So what the hell, picked it up.
Listen, this is just remakes by Great White. Some may see it as a rip, but it feels very sincere. They keep to the script 100%. I will say the music sounds a little restrained, they may have loosened up just a tad more. Very safe in that regard. The Drums aren't Bonham that's for sure. But there is a really good energy to the tracks nonetheless and GW do not embarrass themselves a bit.
Jack Russell does a great Plant. Probably better than Plant at doing Zep era Plant these days. The disc is about JR and he does not disappoint. That is what is on display here, the vox. A great vocal performance and impression of Plant's style in the 70's.
They do a very good 'Ramble On', 'Tangerine', 'Since I Been Loving You', 'When the Levee Breaks' and 'Thank You'. Just excellent. 'All of My Love' comes across a bit 'Karoake'-ish. The real shocker was that JR could hit the high screams on 'Immigrant Song'. I mean at his age, thats astonishing.
I never was a huge Great White fan and am a moderate Zep fan, but if you love the songs and wouldn't mind a fresh take on them, by all means, pick it up. It is quite good and they don't toy with the songs. A sincere 'Tribute'. Good to reawaken the Zeppelin fan within.
Out Plants Plant
For those that missed Zeppelin's days of touring in the 70's and are tired of listening to their bootlegs, this is a nice little album to throw on. To be honest, I will buy virtually anything Zep, whether it is done by girls, Celtic fiddle band, orchestra, strings, you get the idea. The lead singer sounds so much like Plant, it is scary. The musicians behind him could have been better, especially the drummer, but we can't have everything. I was surprised by the audience, again, given the fact that Zep hasn't played on a tour for quite a while when this was recorded, I would think they would be going more out of their minds than what was caught on tape.
Great White....Great Zeppelin....Great Again!!
This is such a cool way for Great White to answer all those critics who said that they drew too heavily from their influences. . specifically Zep. The GW guys never tried to hide their love of Zep and here is a true tribute by a band who can actually play Led Zep songs better than anybody you have ever heard!! Put this disc on, close your eyes and you will be as close to a perfect rendering of Zep music as you are likely to ever encounter!!.
