"C'Mon Man" ...Hey Great White; turn it loose, rock a little bit!
I understand we all get older, but C'mon Man! It is O. This would be a great collection of of all their mellow stuff on one CD; and instead its a new CD with all mellow songs that you can hum too!?!? My personal favorite: Danger Zone is very good, but not an answer to actually "rocking". K. ; that's it! I would love to give it 2. 5 stars because its missing half of what it should have; and I rounded up because what these guys used to do! Great White has amazing individual talent. . . use it! If this is who they are now, I respect their decision, and I will remember their energy from the past. Maybe they can pick up the tempo and have some energy and turn it loose on the next release.
Don't expect the Great White of old, but do expect a new and improved Great White
" He continues in the blues vein with the rhythmic chord progression. The Good
Guitarist Mark Kendell supplies some killer blues licks on the intro to "Situation. Vocalist Jack Russell sounds smoother and more melodic in his delivery these days. "Last Chance" is a soulful ballad where vocalist Russell wears his heart on his sleeve. "Shine" kicks up the pace with dominant guitars. Great White break out the acoustics for "Only You Can Do. " Russell's voice has never sounded better.
"Loveless" is the perfect mix of 80s AOR and singer-songwriter material. Great White have never shied away from a good cover tune. In fact, that's how they broke into the mainstream. This time around they delivery a more melodic, less guitar laden version of the Rolling Stones' "Let's Spend the Night Together. " "Is It Enough" is another track in the singer-songwriter style in which Russell is adapting quite well to.
The Bad
Their connection to tragedy probably won't help them sell records.
The Verdict
Don't expect the Great White of old, but do expect a new and improved Great White. The band still knows how to get their blusey rock groove on, but they have adapted to a more melodic, singer-song writer sound that shows great maturity. Some people will say they sold out for the safety of a more universally adult contemporary sound, but I say Great White has never sounded better than they do on Rising. Russell and company have flawlessly made the transition that Def Leppard never could.
When I buy Great White, I want Great White, if I want Barry Manilow, I'll buy Barry Manilow
I loved Great White growing up. Natural progression to music that we can already get from another artist seems to be the themes of all the reviews that I've read. They were one of my favorites of the 80's. When I see Great White, I want to see Great White, not a bunch of old guys writing music that sounds like Neil Young. Music is a business after it's an art. The Art is finding your sound, the business is keeping it. If Great White wants to go broke and go away, I say they keep deserting their fan base and keep on writing albums full of this MUSH. I won't buy another Great White release until I, as a Great White fan, hear rocking Great White songs. I have moved on from bands like Great White, Aerosmith, Def Leppard and so many more, to bands like Tool, bands like System of a Down because of this Syndrome that most musicians seem to get. TOO OLD TO ROCK! Quit trying to sell your fanbase commercial JUNK. Win your fanbase back by giving us the music you sold us in the first place, the stuff we all loved. These new albums aren't growth, they are decay. PS: to the guy who's wife can tolerate this new disc, that just means that it's a girly disc, and more proof that it's no.
Took more than one listen!
This time I listened closely and to my amazement, I really enjoyed what I was hearing! The rhythm is closer to "Rose Motel" than say "Once Bitten", but it is the lyrics that caught my attention the most! Sincere, emotionally charged, and well written. I have to admit that the first time I listened to this CD I was like, what the hell happened to Great White?!?
So I set it aside a few days and then played it again.
Is it their best CD, no. But it is one of the best of a bevy of 80s rockers who are coming out with new CDs!
Def Leppard's latest and Lover Boy's too, are very good. But this is really one to give a listen, or two! If you are thinking that 80s rockers are dead, think again! Listen more than once, and listen closely!!!.
Not as GREAT as it could be.....
I may have been a bit spoiled by the consistently kick-ass music that GW has released over the years, but to me, "Rising" left me kinda bored. I am a huge Great White fan and have everything they have put out. The musicianship is as great as always, but for me, this just doesn't feel like Great White. Mellow is the key word here. I will always go after new music from these guys. Why you ask? Because on there worst day, GW is better than most bands will ever be. .
