the best
I have gone through several copies (albums) and lost the latest in a cross country move and this time will buy the CD since I have nowhere to play the album - too bad because I KNOW the vinyl sounds better with Al's voice, and I'll have to get used to the less mellow digital version. I have to agree with what everyone else said -30 years later and still fresh. . . but still, can't live without being able to hear "Let's Stay Together" whenever I want. The whole album is a gem and there is not one song that I will skip through on the CD player.

Al Green rules!
" The song topped the charts for nine weeks, and there's a good reason for that: Al's vocals are as absolutely perfect as they always are, and the arrangement is spot-on. Al's second classic in a row, and the one with his signature hit: the romantic ballad "Let's Stay Together. Did I mention the melody? When discussing soul's greatest songwriters, we need to add Al Green in the ranks of Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder, and that's no exaggeration. He might be a better singer than either, too, and that would be saying something. Seriously, have you heard his vocals on "La-La for You," one of his signature sexy smokin' gospel-soul jams? That is some good stuff. His singing, and his band, is also in peak form on "Now You're Leaving," and the sensual "Old-Time Loving" is a success as well. And there's also the masterful cover of the Bee Gees' "How do You Mend a Broken Heart?," which he reworks into a slow soul masterpiece. The funky closer "It Ain't No Fun to be Me" is first-rate too. The horns are brilliant! A couple of these songs don't really do it for me: "Judy" has overly sappy strings, "I've Never Had a Girl" doesn't quite work at a dance track, and I can't say much of interest about "So You're Leaving. " But while this isn't quite as good as Gets Next to You or I'm Still in Love With You, it still deserves recognition as a great album, with a good dollop of excellent songs.

Fantastic!
Forget the numerous 'greatest hits' albums out there and buy this. This is a truly great album. In my opinion it manages to combine one of the happiest (Lets stay together) and saddest (How can you mend a broken heart) songs on the same album!.

Get Together With Al
The song is one of the definitive Memphis soul songs with its smooth organ punctuated by horns , Rev. The title track to Let's Stay Together has become Al Green's signature song and a certified r&b classic. Green comes in a low voice and then in the chorus reaches up to a heavenly falsetto. The song became his only his only number one on the pop charts. The album also contains one of his most underrated songs, a stirring version of the Bee Gees' "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart". Rev. Green sings it with a true pain in his voice and the emotion practically oozes out of your speakers. Other excellent songs include "So You're Leaving", "I've Never Found A Girl" and "Judy".

Ahhhh!...... Rev. Al!
That's all you need to know. Al can sing. The most soulful falsetto voice out there (makes mincemeat out of Barry Gibb on 'How Can You Mend a Broken Heart'), and songs made up of beautifully laid-back arrangements. My faves include 'So You're Leaving Me' and 'I've Never Found a Girl'. Good grooves and great vocals.

And then there's the title cut. First heard by these years under a conversation between Ving Rhames and Bruce Willis in Pulp Fiction, on its own it stands out as a monster. A great cross between deceptively complex songwriting and deceptively complex emotions. 'Let's Stay Together' is really about a couple who's breaking apart. And you can feel Al's pain when he sings it. One of the all time great songs, let alone a great performance by my man here.
