yet another wonder from our friends Grinspoon! if only the great bands of australia could gain the recognition they deserve. well well well, the grinners are back and better than ever! New Detention is a great album which explores the realms of alternative rock and mixes in some punk and 'soft rock' aswell. i happen to be a huge fan of many australian bands (grinspoon, the vines, silverchair, etc. ) and these great bands help us feel proud that we can produce some great tunes, too.
Intro: well, i wouldn't actually classify this as a song.
Anyday Anyhow: This is one of my favourite songs of the album. it has a great chorus and phil rocks!
lost control: also brilliant, it has really punchy lyrics and a great bassline.
gone tomorrow: one of the lighter tracks on the cd, which isn't a bad thing at all. i love it!
chemical heart: the first release off the album, this song is the one that drew me into buying it, but i love all of the songs!!
make it happen: i still like this song, but it is one of my least favorites of the cd.
boltcutter: it's great! the musicians in grinspoon are so talented!!!
no reason: a very catchy tune, supported by a hilarious film clip.
killswitch: i think killswitch is a very catchy tune also
1000 miles: it took a while to get used to phil's unique style of "singing" in 1000 miles, but it's grown on me. . . .
damn straight: this song is a very good example of classic grinspoon! and i love it, so i love grinspoon!
hate: the softest song on the cd. i love it, it's lyrics are very meaningful!. . .
I'd like to thank pat, phil, joe and kris for creating another amazing album, and triple j for making them heard. :).
very good find
S until I went over to Australia, but I have to admit this is one of my new favorite cds. I had never heard of this band over here in the U. I love "Lost Control" "No Reason" "Gone Tomorrow" and "Damn Straight" Now you may be thinking that I'm just some hard core rocker but that is not true at all. I listen to hard rock, alternative, and emo and I still love this album. I would just like to thank the salesman in the cd store by the Radisson Hotel on Liverpool St in Sydney Australia for telling me about this band. peace out yo.
The Lands Down Under Are Saving Rock.....
And im not talking about the pathetic pop music that "Silverchair" are churning out, nor am i referring to the much hyped "The Vines". Yes that's right music fans, Australia and New Zealand are re-igniting the flame that is Rock and Grunge. Grinspoon and Shihad(Oooh sorry i mean Pacifier) are finally cracking it overseas and justifiably so. They are true hard rockers that should define the genre, but somehow are overshadowed by acts like Nickelback, Creed (Don't even start me) and Lifehouse (Another travesty). Grinspoon unleash what will no doubt be CD of the year in Oz (The first two singles have spent a combined total of 17 weeks at the top of alternative charts this year) New Detention. . . . . . . . . .
This is the 3rd Album from Grinspoon and by far their most professional and consistent. Over the last 7 years they have moulded perfectly as a group, and New Detention is proof of that. The stand out tracks are of course the singles "Chemical Heart" and "Lost Control". But other tracks such as "Make It Happen" and "No Reason" also very good. Having said that, there isn't a weakness in the CD, just on first listen those are the most appealing. After spending most of last year in America touring with punk legends Unwritten Law (you will find Grinspoon on ELVA in that funny drunken phone conversation) you can see the influence and new effects that Grinner's have adopted. It is no secret that these guys are Australia's favourite sons. I think it should have been them stirring the hype which has been thrown on "The Vines". Shihad (although not originally from Australia) are also brilliant. For a good introduction see "The General Electric". Some years back the two did an Australia wide tour which if you were lucky enough to catch was amazing. Two of the most intense rock acts in the world would belt out their tunes for hours on end.
If you are after a true rocking good time, grab this cd, or one of Grinspoon's earlier albums. "Guide To Better Living" is probably a good start. You will notice the maturity between that and "New Detention". You will not be disappointed.
best grinspoon album
Songs such as "Anyday Anyhow", "Gone Tomorrow", "Lost Control", "Chemical Heart", "Killswitch", "No Reason" and "Damn Straight" make this album the album of the year so far for me. i bought this album the day it came out, and i personally thing that it is grinspoon's best album. The album sounds a little like "Easy", but the songwriting seems to be better and the recording quailty also sounds greater than previous albums.
For me, "Damn Straight" and "No Reason" are definate standouts and sound great. "No Reason" is slower, but still rocks hard, and "Damn Straight" would have to be the coolest song i've heard all year!! Everyone who has heard it, has loved it. Pat Davern's Guitar skills have also greatly improved on this album.
Song listing & rating:
Intro = N/A
Not a song, just an instrumental introduction, which should have been left out
Anyday Anyhow = ****
A great start to a great album, and the chorus is particully good.
Lost Control = *****
the second single from this album, great fun to listen to and a great "rocker"
Gone Tomorrow = *****
Something heavier again, also with a great chorus. Killer guitar riff.
Chemical Heart = ****
Very different from anything Grinspoon have realeased before, as it is a lot softer and more mellow. The first single, and got a lot of commercial radio airplay.
Make It Happen = ***
Phil uses his raspy vocals here (think "Champion"), which I quite dislike. Still, it is a good tune.
Boltcutter = ****
Pretty bad lyrical structure, but still good fun to listen to.
No Reason = *****
A top quality song, with great guitar riffs & melodys. Should be a single, and I hope it does very well. A definate standout.
Killswitch = ****
Probably the most "guitary" song on the album. Has a great guitar solo in the middle.
1000 Miles = **
A physcotic song! Heavy, angry & physco. Not the best song, but still pretty funny.
Damn Straight = *****
Hell yeah!! This song is very cool and is just so much fun to listen to. I think also this will be a single. A definate standout.
Hate = ***
A softer acoustic song, which i am not greatly fond of.
All in all, i think this album is a great addition to Grinspoons other 2 albums. I have no hesitation in giving this album 5 stars and recommending to any rock/alternative/hard rock fan.
