Rivals the Asch Recordings box set

Considering that the Library of Congress box set sells for $36 alone, I'd say this collection is a steal. This box set contains everything on the Library of Congress box set except four songs, the entire "Dust Bowl Ballads" recording, the entire "Columbia River Collection," most of the Almanac Singers' "Sod Buster Ballads" album, and 38 of the 105 songs on the Asch Recordings box set. It contains almost as much music as the Asch Recordings set - 99 songs as opposed to 105 - and it spans a larger portion of Woody's career. It's true that it doesn't contain any material from his children's recordings, but you won't find many of those songs on the Asch set either.

The packaging is mediocre, as you'd expect from Proper. The booklet contains a lengthy biography of Woody but it's written so badly it's exhausting to read. Still, you can't beat this collection for the money.

Extensive Source of great Folksongs
Hard to be belive that it's possible release such a quality well-researched collection at this price. Another great release from Proper Records.

The box contains most of the material recorded and released by Woody Guthrie during 1940-45. The sound quality is quite good, but of course uneven. Interesting that the best sounding recordings are the earliest from the album "Dust Bowl Ballads".

I would have liked to hear some of Guthrie's children songs recorded in the late forties released on the albums "Nursery Days" and "Songs to Grow on for Mother and Child", but fans will have to get these recording on seperate releases. Serious illness made it impossible for Guthrie to record during the last years of his life and these children songs were among the last recordings he was able to do.

Musically the this is an impressive collection and extensive source of great folk-songs. Moreover there is a a fine well-researched 48 pages booklet with biography and discography. Highly recommendable.

Odd Twist
But even though it's not listed on Amazon, it's on there -- as the 26th song on Disc 4. I found it odd that a 4-disc collection of Woody Guthrie wouldn't have This Land Is Your Land.
.

deserves a 10 on a scale of 1-5...
grab this 4 disc properbox & the muddy waters 4 disc properbox 'king of chicago blues', load them into your cd player, grab an adult beverage & sit back & hit play. . it don't get better. .
