Still got it!!! He can write and sing. Sammy proved why he was a successful solo artist before joining Van Halen. Great album. Not my favorite Sammy album, but an excellent one none the less. Great songs with real lyrics. Loved it! .
Sammy Hagar - Who Needs Van Halen I have seen him in concert 3 times and he always puts on a fun energetic show. I always liked Hagar back in the day, and had several of his solo and Van Halen albums on vinyl. "Marching To Mars" came out after he had left Van Halen (the first time) and prior to his current Waborita band. This is a good solid Hager disc full of his patented AOR friendly vocals and guitar. Actually giving this a pure AOR tag is a bit misleading as Hagar branches out quite a bit on this disc incorporating blues, funk, ballads, and other diverse styles into the mix. The album is really an all star project with guest appearances from Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead), Denny Carmassi (Heart), Slash (Guns And Roses / Velvet Revolver), Huey Lewis (Huey Lewis And The News), Mickey Thomas (Jefferson Starship / Starship), Ronnie Montrose (Montrose / Gamma), Matt Sorum (Guns And Roses), and Bootsy Collins (Parliament). Hagar set out to prove that he did not need Van Halen and for the most part succeeds. In fact the funk rock track "Would You Do It For Free" is aimed at the Van Halen brothers. Highlights include "Little White Lie" (which was a minor hit from the disc), "Salvation On Sand Hill", "Both Sides Now" (which sounds a lot like his Van Halen work), "Amnesty Is Granted" (originally recorded by Meatloaf, but written by Hagar), and the title track "Marching To Mars". Overall if you do not already like Hagar this album probably will not convert you, but if you enjoy what he does this album steps out a bit from his usual fare and it is worth checking out.
sleeper worth buying just to get "both sides now" "marching to mars" and "little white lie".
One Of Sammy Hagar's Best "Little White Lie" and "Salvation On Sand Hill" are about betrayal and misplaced trust; "Who Has The Right" is an anti-euthanasia song; "Both Sides Now" reminds us that to avoid getting hurt and losing your looks, you have to look at all sides of a story; and "Amnesty Is Granted" says that the same goal can also be achieved through forgiveness. MARCHING TO MARS is better than anything Sammy Hagar put out with Van Halen. This is an excellent album from one of hard rock's great frontmen.
Sammy's best album " In my opinion, I think "Marching to Mars" is Sammy's finest album. I own every single Sammy Hagar CD, from Montose's self-titled debut, to 2000s "Ten 13. In fact, in my opinion, "Marching to Mars" is one of the best albums of all time. This album doesn't have the arena rock sound of Sammy's pre-VH albums, such as "Standing Hampton" and "VOA. " Instead, Sammy heads for a more bluesy direction. Unlike Sammy's two other post-VH albums, Sammy does not have his backing band the Waboritas. Instead, Sammy uses a variety of talented musicians, such as Slash and Matt Sorum (ex GNR) Bootsy Collins, and Mickey Hart. Sammy was out to prove that he didn't need VH to put out good music, and he certainly did! The album has several highlights. "Who has the Right?" is an anti-death penalty song. "Would you do it for free" is a 70s funk song directed towards the VH brothers. The title title track, is an upbeat rocker that you could dance to. "Amnesty is Granted,"which I think is the best song on the album, is a song about forgiveness. "Leaving the Warmth of the Womb" sees a Montrose reunion. If you like Sammy Hagar's music, this is a must have.
