NOT BAD BUT......
YES, AS OTHER REVIEWERS HAVE SAID THIS IS HAGGARD AT HIS BEST, BUT BUYER BEWARE. . I TOO HAD THIS ALBUM ON VINYL FOR YEARS. BUT THIS RE-ISSUE FROM BRITAIN IS HORRIBLY PROCESSED. THERE IS SO MUCH NOISE REDUCTION, IT TAKES AWAYS THE "AUDITORIUM FEEL" FROM THE ORIGINAL. IT TOTALLY COVERS UP LITTLE "SOUND" NUANCES YOU COULD HEAR ON THE ORIGINAL. THERE WAS NO NEED FOR THIS NOISE REDUCTION, THE ORIGINAL WAS PRODUCED BY CAPITOL RECORDS, FLAWLESSLY. IT'S STILL A GREAT RECORDING, JUST MISSING SOMETHING IN THIS CD RE-ISSUE. I WORK IN RADIO AND HAVE TAKEN MY VINYL ALBUM, RUN IT THROUGH ADOBE AUDITION'S "COOL-EDIT" PRO AND REMOVED ALL POPS AND CLICKS AND DID NOT USE NOISE REDUCTION AND COMPRESSION, AND NOW LUCKILY HAVE, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, THE RECORDING ON CD THE WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE. AND YES, I DO OWN THIS CD TOO, AND PAID WAY TOO MUCH FOR THE QUALITY I RECEIVED. NOW, THAT BEING SAID, THIS GROUP MUST HAVE LEARNED THEIR LESSON, BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING TWO LIVE CAPITOL ALBUMS FROM HAGGARD THAT THEY RELEASED ARE PROCESSED PERFECTLY, THEY JUST MESSED THIS ONE UP! BUT STILL WORTH IT, IF IT'S THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN OWN IT. SO 10 STARS IF IT WAS POSSIBLE FOR THE CONCERT BUT 3 STARS FOR THIS COMPANY'S RE-ISSUE. .

Live Phili 1970 Concert Top Notch!
I spent years looking for a new copy and snatched it up when it finally came out on CD. My dad got this album on LP when I was a kid, and he and I used to listen and sing to it all the time and for years, wearing it down with scratches in the LP. The energy and quality of the songs and talent on that stage is awesome. Bonnie Owens messing up Phili Lawyer was a warm hoot, and the impersinations are second to none - never heard him do any on any other album. I know every inflection of every word on this album and happily still sing along to it (when I'm alone). It's truly a MUST HAVE for Merle fans!

"The Hag" In Philadelphia
Merle Haggard is in early top form and Bonnie Owens was probably one of the better female singers recorded, makes for an entertaining overall listen, as is also this live recording here, titled "The Fightin' Side Of Me" recorded,1970,in Philadelphia to a packed house,as Merle Haggard and the Strangers were in top form that night as they started out with a great version of,PRIDE IN WHAT I AM, then Merle calls out the fiddle player,Chubby Wise, member of Hank Snow's band to help out on a Bob Wills number, titled "Corrine Corrina",then "Hag" introduces a Jimmy Rodgers tune, the "T. Just Between The Two Of Us,1966,Merle Haggard's second album on Capitol, shares the spotlight with Bonnie Owens,as they both showcase a pretty good collection of duets here with a solid country sound covering songs like Buck Owens',FOREVER ABD EVER,Tommy Collins',WAIT A LITTLE LONGER,PLEASE JESUS and countless others. B. Blues" and sings it as if it was his own,remarkable,-Haggard always right on key with a J. Rodgers song. The highlight of this show is when Merle does a short medley of impersonations of other notable country artist, doing an exceptional job, showing us the true talent that Haggard really is. The show then ends with one of the best country ballads of all time,TODAY I STARTED LOVING YOU AGAIN and the protesting against anti- war anthem,FIGHTIN' SIDE OF ME. Sometimes "live" is better, and this England import BGO cd is a good one,and another additive for a Merle Haggard collector. .

Just Between the Two of Us/The Fightin' Side of Me
Bring back memories of deer hunting with my Dad and Brothers. If you like clasic 70's country than this CD is for you. .

from the vaults
This is the better of the two live Haggard albums I own, and I love his impressions, along with the novelty song "Harold's Super Service," available no place else. "Fightin' Side of Me," was recorded live in Philadelphia in the late '60s or early '70s, when protesting the Vietnam war was all the rage. That one inspired a story by Jean Shepherd for "Playboy," about a pump jockey. Any song that can get Jean Shepherd interested is worth hearing--and singing. The truly weird part of this CD is just this--the first part, "Just Between the Two of Us," isn't Merle Haggard. That's a Buck Owens album. There's no mistake whatsoever. So, this is the oddest combo on one CD I ever heard. Luckily I enjoy Buck, so no problem, and I would have paid the full price just for the live Haggard album alone if I had to. a real treat.
