Excellent but overlooked work of art I found it soon after release and enjoyed the album because it seemed to mark a return to a simpler acoustic style. I've been a Richie Havens fan for over 30 years, and this is one of my favorites of his very extensive catalog. As with many older Richie albums, it includes several covers in which he recasts the material into his very distinctive style that often makes it more memorable than the original. My favorite song on this album is "The Hawk", written by Kris Kristofferson. Also found covers of Sting's "They Dance Alone", and Jackson Browne's "Lives in the Balance" to be very strong, along with a bluesy rework of the Youngblood's "Darkness, Darkness". These are songs that still sound fresh when I play them today.
Meanwhile, I have been waiting a very very long time for a CD release of Richie's live album, "On Stage" that gathered various live performances from 1971 & 1972. The double LP is excellent, but mine are scratched from tons of play, so I would like to have this album on CD format. Richie's official website has indicated the "On Stage" CD is "coming soon" for what seems like 1-2 years at least.

Thank-you Richie Havens!
I have been playing this same cd for a few years now and it does not fail to lift my spirits and warm my soul. I picked up this cd after I happened upon a Richie Havens concert in a small intimate venue - a remarkable experience that I will never forget it. Richie has an internal energy that he shares through his music. Instead of tiring of the music, I have grown closer to it. I have entered Amazon today to purchase this cd as a gift I am sure the recipient will enjoy! Thank-you Richie Havens!.
AN ALMOST FORGOTTEN LEGEND
THIS IS A TYPICAL RICHIE HAVENS CD. . . PASSIONATE, SOUL WRENCHING, AND POWERFUL. RICHIE HAVENS IS A TRUE UNDER APPRECIATED AMERICAN MUSIC LEGEND. HIS STYLE IS LIKE NO ONE ELSE. YOU CAN'T HELP PLAYING THIS ONE OVER-AND-OVER.
AWESOME SONGS WITH HEART
I'M JUST A VERY BIG FAN. I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO RICHIE PLAY SINCE I WAS FIFTEEN AND NOW I'M JUST ANOTHER BABY BOOMER,BUT HIS MUSIC IS ETERNAL AND SHOULD STAND THE TEST OF TIME LIKE THE BEATLES . MAHALO. JAN SIMONE,N. J.
Too Bad More Artists Weren't This Amazing..
My personal favorites are How the Nights can Fly, which can literally bring you to tears of happiness, and Don't Pass it Up, a great Richie version destined to become a classic. This album is incredible! I wouldn't recommend listening to Lives in the Balance while driving; you may find yourself speeding uncontrollably.
Richie, if you're reading this, PLEEEEASSE come on back to East Tennessee - we're waiting!.
