What Tracks Were Recorded When By Who....

Originally released in April of 1987, Dave Brock says that, "It was bits and pieces we had hanging around, weird things like Turner Point. Since the CD liner notes do not delineate when which songs were recorded by who I have included that information here for the true Hawkfan. Harvey had Cajun Jinx. It was really just to finance us all and keep the whole thing going" (Carol Clerk's The Saga of Hawkwind).

Unfortunately, that is exactly what this collection of live and studio tracks from 1982 to 1986 sounds like to me. I personally number all my Hawkwind tracks in my computer chronologically so they fall more coherently in the Hawkwind saga. For others who may wish to do likewise:

Recorded at Rockfield Studios, 1982 (Brock-gtr, kybrd, vcls; Lloyd-Langton-gtr, vcl; Bainbridge-bass, kybrd, vcl; Griffin-drms; Turner-sax, flute, vcl)
1. Turner Point (Brock/Griffin/Turner) 2:19
10. Five To Four AKA 5/4 (Lloyd-Langton) 2:18

Recorded live in November 1982 (Brock-gtr, kybrd, vcls; Lloyd-Langton-gtr, vcl; Bainbridge-bass, kybrd, vcl; Griffin-drms; Turner-sax, flute, vcl; Moorcock-vcls on 12 & 13)
(Probably Nov 12) 1982
2. Waiting For Tomorrow (Lloyd-Langton) 4:45
4. Solitary Mind Games (Lloyd-Langton) 5:09
11. Ghost Dance (Turner/Bainbridge) 3:47
CD bonus tracks
12. Coded Languages (Moorcock/Bainbridge) 4:20
(Probably Nov 13) 1982
13. Warrior On The Edge Of Time (Moorcock) 3:33

Recorded at Rockfield Studios, 1986 (Brock-gtr, kybrd, vcls; Lloyd-Langton-gtr, vcl; Bainbridge-bass, kybrd, vcl; Davey-bass, vcl; Thompson Jr-drms; Paul Cobbold-organ on 3 & 8)
3. Cajun Jinx (Brock/Bainbridge/Davey/Thompson) 5:02
5. Starflight (Calvert/Bainbridge/Brock) 1:48
6. Ejection (Calvert) 2:14
7. Assassins Of Allah AKA Hassan I Sabah (Calvert/Rudolph)3:53
8. Flight To Maputo (Brock/Bainbridge/Davey/Thompson) 5:23
9. Confrontation (Brock/Bainbridge/Davey/Thompson) 3:02

I own just about everything Hawkwind ever officially released and a lot that's been unofficially released and I find this CD a little boring with a few exceptions. If you are a new fan of Hawkwind I would suggest you purchase the 2-CD version of Space Ritual first- in my opinion the best space rock album ever issue. Follow it up with the Hawklords reissue with bonus tracks (which smokes) or the Doremi Fasol Latido reissue with bonus tracks. For 'hits' try Sonic Boom Killers or Golden Void. You can't go wrong with any of those CDs.

Hawkwind - 'Out And Intake' (Griffin Music)
S. This lp was originally released in 1987 on Flicknife Records, available only in the U. as an expensive import, until now. Nik Turner returned only briefly for this album. 'Out. . . ' starts off with his instrumental "Turner Point". 'Out And Intake' ALSO marks the return of guitarist Huw Lloyd Langton who was on Hawkwind's 1970 debut lp. "Cajun Jinx" is a somewhat stunning psychedelic piece, the short track "Starflight" is pretty decent and THIS disc's version of Bob Calvert's "Ejection" is also worthwhile. The studio cut for "Assassins Of Allah" is on here and is better than the live take I've heard on a rare HW live effort. The mind-lifting "Ghost Dance"(a tune that Turner sometimes still plays while on tour)sounds pretty potent to me. There's a bonus cut added which is a live version of "Warrior On The Edge Of Time". Not the best Hawkwind release ever unleashed, but still nice to own a copy of.

The glory daze
This is one of the classic compilations. Back when they still had the greats: Lloyd Langton, Bainbridge, and Nik Turner. . . you can't go wrong.

out takes and live material from "sonic attack" period
it includes ripping versions of "waiting for tomorrow," "hassan i sabbat (assassins of allah)," and "solitary mind games. this is an excellent little toss-out by the Hawks. " A thumping "ghost dance," also highlights the set. For a hawkfan, this is an absolute must-have. For the curious, not a bad place to start.
