revisiting a singular genius on cassette this sunday morn
i had thought of rambling off some essential recordings of his during my voting process . sadly MIKE passed away many years ago now . they're all worthy . hope you check him out if you're not yet in the loop .

A great live album by the great & sadly late Michael Hedges
One I hate when you mention the harp guitar or tapping on the acoustic guitar and immediately somebody mentions Andy McGee. I want to set the record straight here about a few things. Now don't get me wrong Andy McGee is a phenomenal musician bar none but what most fail to realize is that Hedges was the first to wield the harp guitar and do this kind of playing and because of his untimely death in a car wreck he's faded into the back round and mostly forgotten until you listen to this beautiful live album which has only one guy putting on a great show with his regular and harp guitars. My favorite tunes here are Because It's There, his awesome cover of Prince's Love Bizarre, Double Planet and Funky Aveocado. Hedges is also a good vocalist and does some great singing here too. His writing style is inventive and like one of our fellow reviewers stated "don't let the new age label fool you. " This music is not yani or anything not dissing him or anything simply making a point. Check this album out for some great inventive guitar playing and some easy listening thats not the dirty word. .

Mike will be missed.
Now it is the last that I have bought on CD. This was the first Mike Hedges album I ever owned on cassette. I own most all of his collection and love his music. I was sad to here that there will be no more.

A TRAILBLAZING GUITARIST

If you are here, then you must be a guitar nut. This is a wonderful cd but just hearing him does not fully depict how amazing of an artist he was. Go all the way and get the dvd "WIndham Hill Live" where Hedges plays 3 or 4 songs.

He is not only phenomenal but also you can see the physicality of his playing. It puts his music in a totally different light! That dvd is the absolutely best work by this tremendous musical visionary.

bizzare and beautiful
full of inventive and creative playing that is beautiful and mind-boggling. this being the only Micheal Hedges album that i own and the only one that i have heard, i cannot comment in much detail about how this compares to his other recordings; but Live On The Double Planet is an extraordinary listen. the cover songs are amazing and really break out of the mold of the original. . . some are almost unrecognizeable until the vocals begin. the quiet pieces are the most effective compositions on here. . . the mood is very reflective and the beauty in his playing is astonishing.
