Probably the greatest album of all time

Its probably one of the greatest collection of jams ever recorded. I just started listening to this album for the millionth time and felt like amazon reviewing that probably
anyone who cares about Hendrix and rock in the 60s should be required to own this album. Machine gun is of course the lead track.


Expanding the realm of Rock N Roll
It sounds like Jimi is having fun playing with his friends. This CD is an example of early Funk. "Them Changes" and the "Power of Soul" are fine examples of Jimi expanding the genre and his ability to blend R&B with Rock-n-Roll. Another excellent version of Buddy Mile's "Them Changes" is the live verion recorded with Carlos Santana. It seems that Carlos pays tribute to Jimi in that one.

RIP Jimi, we still miss you.


Hendrix at his best !!

Hendrix at his best. If somebody only want to buy one cd from Jimi Hendrix, i will say, buy Band of Gypsys.
On his other live cd's ( Woodstock, Monterey,Winterland, Berkeley)he was sometime's a little sloppy, some solo's very good, and some not that good.
But on Band of Gypsys his guitar playing is great, and guitar heroes like Joe satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen say's that his solo in Machine gun is still one of the best ever.
Also on this cd the best version of Message of love, and the great wha solo in changes i can listen to everyday.
JUST BUY THIS CD !!!!!!.


Historic music and great album
This is my favorite band highlighting Buddy Miles and his drive and power. Some of the best Hendrix from the "Band of Gypsys" era. Power Trios are so rare and Jimi's formations are a classic study of this, rarely well executed, musical grouping. All the songs are Hendrix classics.


Overwhelming
This band, an attempt on Hendrix part to move in a new direction, had some great elements. Power of Soul, and Message to Love have some truly great guitar work. Frankly, I wonder of Buddy Miles was right for the band. But Billy Cox was perfect for Hendrix.

Now, I must address Machine Gun. The first time I heard it, it scared me to death. I knew Hendrix' music, and what he was capable of doing. But the sheer instensity of this song was almost unendurable. I've met people who were in Viet Nam, and other wars. They all told me that Hendrix nailed it: took the sound and emotional / visceral experience (no pun intended) of a war zone, and transformed it into music.

I also know some people who were at this concert. One of them was on acid, and said that during Machine Gun, it actually felt like machine gun bullets hitting him. Another person, who was not on acid during the concert, said the exact same thing! Hendrix was a master at creating a musical vibe in any place he played - and no state of consciousness, high or sober - could stand against what he was conjuring.
