Great set of rare jewels
And some of it Jimi seemed to just be goofing around. There is stuff on here that would have made many a performer proud to have released on an album.
It was great to hear the reaction to the backup singers in the alt take of Hey Joe. The guy could be funny!.

Not really a "Box Set"
While the fidelity of the recordings has never sounded better, (including some much improved remixes) calling this a box set is somewhat deceiving. If you're looking for a comprehensive collection of Hendrix recordings, you'll just have to keep waiting cause this isn't it. Hendrix released three studio albums and one live recording while alive, and several of the highlights of those recordings are not here. There's no Castles Made of Sand, Manic Depression, Love or Confusion, May This Be Love, Crosstown Traffic, Remember, etc. That being said, there is some stuff here for a Hendrix collector that is dying to have some new/slightly different material to add to their collection. .

Better than the original studio albums!
They sound much more experimental and less commercial. The alternate versions of songs are just plain better and probably the versions Hendrix himself liked better. This has lots of great blues tunes and some more obscure stuff you have never heard before. A must have for any fan. This and Blues are must haves and have to be my 2 favorites in the Hendrix library. Jimi is the greatest guitarist that ever lived and I am happy with releases like this that the Hendrix family has put out. .

Good Hendrix Collection Of Unreleased Material

There are 56 recordings spread out over four disks. This box set is made up exclusively of album outtakes, unreleased live takes, and some unreleased studio songs from The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Band Of Gypsys, and Gpysy Sun & Rainbows. It's the perfect compilation to complete your Hendrix collection once you have purchased the classic albums _Are You Experienced_(1967), _Axis:Bold As Love_(1967), _Electric Ladyland_(1968), _Band Of Gypsys_(1970) and the studio/live compilation CDs like _South Saturn Delta_ (1997), _Live At The Fillmore East_(1999), _BBC Sessions_(1997), _Live At Woodstock_(1999)and _Blues_ (1994)!

Some highlights include the studio version of "The Star Spangled Banner", the rehearsal studio takes of "Spanish Castle Magic" and "Hear My Train A Coming" (excellent extended solos), the awesome instrumental takes of "Little Wing and "Bold As Love", the jam with jazz keyboard player Larry Young "It's Too Bad", a short jam "Slow Blues" showcasing Hendrix's more melodic blues style, and a memorable medley of "Hay Baby (New Rising Sun)/In From The Storm" recorded on July 30, 1970 in the island of Maui, Hawaii.

The only criticism is the fact that there is a lot of excellent stuff in the vaults still awaiting an official release like for example the Winterland concerts, the two Larry Lee sung compositions that Hendrix performed at Woodstock "Mastermind" and "Gypsy Woman", or some studio songs like "Valleys Of Neptune" and "Bolero" but if you are a Hendrix fan, you ought to check out this excellent unreleased material box set!
